Race Director’s
Greeting
On April 4, 2009 the Charlottesville Track Club presents the 34th running of the Charlottesville
Ten Miler. The “Ten Miler” is truly a community event as runners, volunteers, sponsors, the
University, the city, entertainers, and spectators from across the area join to participate in
Charlottesville’s oldest and largest foot race.
This amazing race traverses some of the most beautiful scenery in our community including
the dogwood lined streets of the University, Rugby Road, and Lexington Avenue and the brick
paved paths of the Downtown Mall, Court Square and “the corner.”
In the last five years, the Ten Miler has raised over $100,000 for our designated beneficiaries:
Charlottesville/Albemarle Rescue Squad, Piedmont CASA, Madison House, SPCA, and the
Charlottesville Track Club’s Scholarship Fund, among others. We are happy to announce that
the primary beneficiary of the 2009 Ten Miler will be PACEM (find out how this organization
helps to feed and shelter the homeless at www.pacemshelter.org).
Madison House will once again be coordinating our volunteer effort for the 2009 race. Runners
will pass by the Madison House door step just past mile marker three as they head down
Rugby Road toward Beta Bridge. Madison House is actively involved in race preparations as
they recruit and train the over 400 course volunteers that are required to execute an event
of this size.
As race directors, we’re always open to suggestions to continue to make the Ten Miler the
best race possible. For 2009, we have instituted cash awards and a disposable timing chip.
We continue to provide online registration, on-course photography, “wicking” race shirts,
extra awards for competitive age categories, and food, warmth, and award festivities inside
University Hall at the completion of the race.
An event of this magnitude would not be possible without the generous support of our sponsors.
Many thanks go to our primary financial supporter, Virginia National Bank, whose support of
our race proves that it really is “all about the people...and always will be.” Many thanks also
to Brooks for supplying our “wicking” race shirts, and to Pepsi for their generous product
contributions.
We’d also like to thank Erin. Although she refers to the event as “the race that shall not be
named,” she has been patient and helpful as we complete many race related tasks.
Your support is also greatly appreciated, so we hope to see you out on race day...whether you’re
running, volunteering, singing, or cheering!
Sincerely,
Dan & Alice Wiggins
