Head of <strong>School</strong> <strong>Report</strong><br />

Student Government Association<br />

The 2008-2009 SGA was led by President Hannah Roller, Vice-President/Treasurer Rhett Adams, and Secretary<br />

Monica Pollard. The school year presented many changes and challenges for the SGA officers and representatives,<br />

but their leadership brought the student body together. The officers and representatives organized several social<br />

events including: Luau, War Night, Oktoberfest, See-You-at-the-Pole, Freeze Bowl, Middle <strong>School</strong> Christmas<br />

Party, Valentine’s Skate Party, Movie Nights, and Spirit Days. The SGA officers also played an important role in<br />

Project <strong>Faith</strong>, organizing the Color Wars, creating the very popular “Project <strong>Faith</strong> Rangers,” and serving as crew<br />

leaders at the various sites. The SGA leadership also spearheaded the purchase of a memorial bench for Hannah<br />

George that was presented to the school in May.<br />

Academic & Service Clubs<br />

Hi-Y (YMCA Government Club) - FCS had a delegation of eighteen students attend the Model General Assembly<br />

in Richmond in March, serving as senators, delegates, reporters, executive representatives and pages. Out of<br />

the 550 MGA attendees, Susannah Haig, an FCS freshman, was chosen by the YMCA as one of twenty Virginia<br />

students to attend the highly selective YMCA National Affairs Conference to be held during the summer at the<br />

YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly in Black Mountain, North Carolina. Students from across the nation gather at this<br />

conference to debate issues of national and international importance.<br />

Over the years, Hi-Y has purchased the three flags and stands which are on the school stage, the flags that hang<br />

in every classroom, and the large American flag that hangs in the gym. Hi-Y also donated the electrical outlet<br />

in the PVO Room off the Great Room! During 2008-2009, the FCS Hi-Y Club gave two substantial gifts to the<br />

school: a contribution to the Hannah George Memorial Bench, and extensive landscaping for the upper entrance<br />

to the school and near the Kindergarten playground. Hannah Roller served as President.<br />

Ministerium Society – The Ministerium Society is a student-led organization for middle, & upper school which<br />

seeks to show the light of Christ through practical acts of service and mercy in accord with Jesus’ teaching in the<br />

Sermon on the Mount: “Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory<br />

to your Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 5:16). Ministerium organizes and performs service projects for both<br />

the school community and the Roanoke community at large. This society allows students to participate in schoolwide<br />

drives for charities, provides tutoring and janitorial help at the school, and also gets students involved with<br />

non-profit organizations such as Samaritan’s Purse, Second Harvest Food Bank, Blue Ridge Women’s Center, the<br />

Rescue Mission, and local nursing homes.<br />

Veritas Honor Society – Our <strong>School</strong> honor society serves to promote enthusiasm for academic excellence<br />

and scholarship, to stimulate the desire to serve, to promote worthy leadership, and to encourage character<br />

development in students. Ten students met the requirements for inclusion this year. In May, five new inductees<br />

were chosen for membership in the coming year. Joanna Bayliss served as president and Hannah Roller served<br />

as vice-president for the 2008-2009 school year.<br />

Arts & Electives<br />

Drama - Middle <strong>School</strong> drama students performed monologues and improvisations in class and performed tales<br />

from Hans <strong>Christian</strong> Andersen for parents and lower school students. Upper <strong>School</strong> drama students presented<br />

a Veterans’ Day program for the school and community, and in the winter performed contemporary scenes<br />

based on Shakespeare’s sonnets. In the spring, Upper <strong>School</strong> students participated in various public speaking<br />

assignments. By audition, thirty sixth through twelfth grade students were cast in the school’s major production,<br />

Oliver Twist, which drew audiences totaling over 650 to the <strong>School</strong>. This was the first production to use the newly<br />

donated stage curtains.<br />

Visual Art – Display of student art work was ongoing in grades K-12. The Spring Festival of the Arts included a<br />

major juried art show of all grammar school student work, and all elective art students in grades seven through<br />

twelve. The Middle and Upper <strong>School</strong> Art students also took part in the creation of a mural for the Salvation<br />

Army’s Community Center in downtown Roanoke.<br />

Journalism – Meeting after school, the Yearbook Club worked to provide the <strong>Faith</strong> <strong>Christian</strong> <strong>School</strong> community<br />

an edition of The Standard that captured the spirit and energy of the 2008-2009 school year, as well as the<br />

common faith that we share.<br />

Athletics -<strong>Faith</strong> <strong>Christian</strong> <strong>School</strong> Athletics revealed strength, character, growth, and talent through its athletes.<br />

Whether laying the foundation for success in young athletes, or displaying developed skills and team unity in the<br />

fight for State championships, FCS athletes played with great integrity, solidarity, and champion spirit.
