Student Government Association
The 2008-2009 SGA was led by President Hannah Roller, Vice-President/Treasurer Rhett Adams, and Secretary
Monica Pollard. The school year presented many changes and challenges for the SGA officers and representatives,
but their leadership brought the student body together. The officers and representatives organized several social
events including: Luau, War Night, Oktoberfest, See-You-at-the-Pole, Freeze Bowl, Middle School Christmas
Party, Valentine’s Skate Party, Movie Nights, and Spirit Days. The SGA officers also played an important role in
Project Faith, organizing the Color Wars, creating the very popular “Project Faith Rangers,” and serving as crew
leaders at the various sites. The SGA leadership also spearheaded the purchase of a memorial bench for Hannah
George that was presented to the school in May.
Academic & Service Clubs
Hi-Y (YMCA Government Club) - FCS had a delegation of eighteen students attend the Model General Assembly
in Richmond in March, serving as senators, delegates, reporters, executive representatives and pages. Out of
the 550 MGA attendees, Susannah Haig, an FCS freshman, was chosen by the YMCA as one of twenty Virginia
students to attend the highly selective YMCA National Affairs Conference to be held during the summer at the
YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly in Black Mountain, North Carolina. Students from across the nation gather at this
conference to debate issues of national and international importance.
Over the years, Hi-Y has purchased the three flags and stands which are on the school stage, the flags that hang
in every classroom, and the large American flag that hangs in the gym. Hi-Y also donated the electrical outlet
in the PVO Room off the Great Room! During 2008-2009, the FCS Hi-Y Club gave two substantial gifts to the
school: a contribution to the Hannah George Memorial Bench, and extensive landscaping for the upper entrance
to the school and near the Kindergarten playground. Hannah Roller served as President.
Ministerium Society – The Ministerium Society is a student-led organization for middle, & upper school which
seeks to show the light of Christ through practical acts of service and mercy in accord with Jesus’ teaching in the
Sermon on the Mount: “Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory
to your Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 5:16). Ministerium organizes and performs service projects for both
the school community and the Roanoke community at large. This society allows students to participate in schoolwide
drives for charities, provides tutoring and janitorial help at the school, and also gets students involved with
non-profit organizations such as Samaritan’s Purse, Second Harvest Food Bank, Blue Ridge Women’s Center, the
Rescue Mission, and local nursing homes.
Veritas Honor Society – Our School honor society serves to promote enthusiasm for academic excellence
and scholarship, to stimulate the desire to serve, to promote worthy leadership, and to encourage character
development in students. Ten students met the requirements for inclusion this year. In May, five new inductees
were chosen for membership in the coming year. Joanna Bayliss served as president and Hannah Roller served
as vice-president for the 2008-2009 school year.
Arts & Electives
Drama - Middle School drama students performed monologues and improvisations in class and performed tales
from Hans Christian Andersen for parents and lower school students. Upper School drama students presented
a Veterans’ Day program for the school and community, and in the winter performed contemporary scenes
based on Shakespeare’s sonnets. In the spring, Upper School students participated in various public speaking
assignments. By audition, thirty sixth through twelfth grade students were cast in the school’s major production,
Oliver Twist, which drew audiences totaling over 650 to the School. This was the first production to use the newly
donated stage curtains.
Visual Art – Display of student art work was ongoing in grades K-12. The Spring Festival of the Arts included a
major juried art show of all grammar school student work, and all elective art students in grades seven through
twelve. The Middle and Upper School Art students also took part in the creation of a mural for the Salvation
Army’s Community Center in downtown Roanoke.
Journalism – Meeting after school, the Yearbook Club worked to provide the Faith Christian School community
an edition of The Standard that captured the spirit and energy of the 2008-2009 school year, as well as the
common faith that we share.
Athletics -Faith Christian School Athletics revealed strength, character, growth, and talent through its athletes.
Whether laying the foundation for success in young athletes, or displaying developed skills and team unity in the
fight for State championships, FCS athletes played with great integrity, solidarity, and champion spirit.
