A PrOMISING Future Bolstered
by Past Achievement
The decision to support any organization comes down to faith—faith
in the importance of its mission, the strength of its vision, and its ability
to deliver on its promises.
In the 160 years since its founding, Loyola has delivered on its promise
to educate students according to Ignatian ideals. The proof of our success
is in our graduates, who demonstrate intellectual curiosity, openness,
compassion, humility, adaptability, and the capacity and eagerness to drive
positive change where they work and live.
Our vision for the future is achievable with your generous support. Together,
we will elevate every dimension of the Loyola experience—from the
intellectual engagement of our students and the excellence of our athletic
teams to the positive impact we have in Baltimore and beyond.

Intellectual engagement and experiential learning
Campaign
Objectives
The more engaged students feel in their studies and the more connected
they feel to their community, the more successful they will be during
their time at Loyola and after graduation. Gifts to the Bright Minds, Bold Hearts
campaign will help to ensure that every student connects with people,
topics, and experiential learning opportunities that profoundly change their
lives and prepare them to make a difference in their careers.
Men and women for others
Becoming men and women
for others is a central tenet of the
Jesuit mission—one that
is infused in all we do. Loyola’s
unparalleled service-learning
program gives students
the opportunity to delve deeply
into topics related to their
service projects—such as justice,
diversity, leadership, and
social responsibility—through
related coursework. Students
reflect on their experiences
and gain the broad perspective
they need to address
complex issues. Bright Minds, Bold
Hearts supports a number
of initiatives focused on improving
individual lives and entire
communities—from enhancing
urban education in Baltimore and
beyond to revitalizing a nearby
business district and community.
4 5 Bright Minds, Bold Hearts

Campus and student life
With its whole-person approach to education, Loyola provides students
with every opportunity to shine—from encouraging their athletic
talents to fostering their ethical and spiritual development. The Bright Minds,
Bold Hearts campaign supports Loyola’s efforts to cultivate a campus
community that reflects the diverse people and perspectives students will
encounter in their professional and personal lives, and fosters a dynamic,
well-rounded, thoughtful learning environment.
Academic excellence
and innovation
The academic excellence
of any university begins with its
learning community. That’s
why Loyola has long
been committed to recruiting
exceptional teacher-scholars
and to ensuring that the
cost of higher education
doesn’t pose an insurmountable
barrier to enrollment for
promising students. Growing our
endowment for scholarships,
fellowships, faculty chairs, and
professorships is the cornerstone
of Bright Minds, Bold Hearts—
enabling us to honor those
commitments for years to come.
The campaign will also support
new academic initiatives,
groundbreaking research, and
other vital programs that help
the University cultivate a diverse,
deeply intellectual culture
and compete directly with some of
the nation’s most elite colleges.
The world beyond Loyola
A keen understanding of global dynamics and the ability to work
effectively with diverse groups are imperatives for success in
today’s interconnected world. With nearly 65 percent of Loyola students
studying abroad—the third-highest percentage in the nation—we
are well ahead of the game in terms of preparing students to meet these
challenges. Our goal is to ensure that every student graduates with
the global understanding, social awareness, and strong ethical framework
needed to navigate the world successfully after graduation.

CLAIRE MATHEWS mcGINNIS, Ph.d. (Left)
Professor of Theology
Ryan Blake, ’16 (Right)
Messina participant and advisory
board member
“ Messina gives you the opportunity to really get to know your
professors and fellow classmates. Sometimes a casual exchange
with someone in my hall about a reading assignment would
turn into a conversation that lasted until 4 a.m.” Ryan Blake, ’16

The first year of college is pivotal. For many
students, it’s the first time they’re living
away from home, taking college-level courses,
and being treated as independent adults.
To help undergraduates acclimate to life on
campus and set a clear path for success in
college and in their careers, Loyola University
Maryland is spearheading a distinctive firstyear
program called Messina. Named for
the city in Sicily where the Jesuits established
their first college for lay students, Messina
is an interdisciplinary living learning experience
that comprises several learning clusters,
each devoted to a separate theme. Students
take two seminars—one in the fall and one
in the spring—that are thematically linked, going
through each seminar with the same group of
students to foster a strong sense of community
and intellectual engagement. Students in
the same learning cluster also live in the same
residence hall, breaking down the traditional
barrier between classroom and dorm.
“The common theme becomes an invitation
for creativity, and for students to make connections
between course material, their lives,
and the world around them,” says Claire Mathews
McGinnis, Ph.D., a professor of theology
whose Messina seminar explores the theme of
“self and other.” “I try to get students to
think about how they’re being shaped by their
current communities, what roles they play
in those communities, and how they might do
things differently to be a more positive force.”
8 9 Bright Minds, Bold Hearts

Launched in 2013 and a key
priority for the campaign,
Messina is causing a great deal
of excitement at Loyola—
reinvigorating academic life
across campus with innovative
courses and new opportunities
for collaborative, communitybased
learning.

“ Establishing a scholarship at Loyola is an investment
in the future, and an investment you can trust. It
supports a young scholar who has demonstrated great
academic ability, and an educational institution
with a 160-year track record of producing students with
the capacity and commitment to make a positive
difference in the world.” Brian F. Linnane, S.J.
most in the world were her four children, higher
education, and her Catholic faith.
12 13 Bright Minds, Bold Hearts

From ensuring that promising students can enroll regardless
of their financial circumstances to supporting faculty development
and groundbreaking research, Bright Minds, Bold Hearts will
help Loyola continue to raise its academic profile—and its national
reputation—while strengthening our commitment to Jesuit ideals.
Your generous support of the campaign will strengthen Loyola’s
ability to provide an academically rigorous education in the
Ignatian tradition that prepares students to improve lives and meet
complex challenges head on.
Growing Loyola’s endowment for scholarships
and fellowships is one of the best ways
to strengthen the academic culture of Loyola,
ensuring that the cost of education is not
a barrier to enrollment for high-achieving
students.
BOLD AMBITIONS
The fact that these all converged at Loyola—
where her son, Brian F. Linnane, S.J., has
been president for nearly a decade—makes it
easy to understand why Mary Linnane was
counted among Loyola University Maryland’s
most loyal Evergreen Fund donors.
After Mary’s passing in September 2011,
Fr. Linnane and his father, Joseph, chose to
honor her memory by establishing a Loyola
scholarship in her name. With the help
of family and friends, the Mary T. Linnane
Scholarship Fund was fully established in
just two years and awarded to its first
recipient, Dennis Cahill, ’14, in summer 2013.
The award couldn’t have come at a better
time for Cahill, who had been concerned about
covering tuition in his final year at Loyola.
“When I learned about the scholarship, I felt
an enormous weight lift from my shoulders,” says
Cahill, an interdisciplinary major in psychology
and sociology who’s looking into graduate school
for next fall. “Receiving the Mary T. Linnane
Scholarship is a tremendous help to me and my
family—and an incredible honor.”
MESSINA $19 million
Transforming the first-year experience
The largest single funding initiative of the campaign, Messina is a uniquely
supportive, engaging, and rigorous interdisciplinary program for first-year
students. Students live and learn with a small cluster of peers, enabling them
to build connections from the moment they arrive on campus and to stay
intellectually and personally engaged in and out of class. The program is proof
positive of Loyola’s commitment to academic innovation and to continually
advancing our Jesuit-based liberal arts education to address the needs of 21st
century students.
SELLINGER SCHOOL $17.5 million
Preparing leaders committed to positive change
Innovative and rapidly growing in prestige, the Sellinger School of Business and Management
teaches students to become discerning, socially responsible business leaders who facilitate
positive economic growth and change. Key funding priorities within the school include
scholarships, fellowships, and faculty support as well as the Student Experiential Learning Lab,
a crucial learning program that gives students experience using the latest finance tools in
the context of real-world projects—from managing a portion of the Loyola University Maryland
endowment to facilitating business development within the Baltimore community.
ATHLETICS $11.5 million
Raising standards—and our national profile
The recent successes of our sports teams have
increased our visibility and helped propel us into the
Patriot League—an invitation we received based
on both our athletic prowess and academic excellence.
Athletics is a major component of student life at
Loyola and a major fundraising priority of Bright Minds,
Bold Hearts. We will provide an extra boost to the
upward trajectory of our sports teams by attracting
and retaining more top coaches, recruiting some
of the nation’s most talented student athletes, and
supporting the quality and upkeep of our facilities.
LOYOLA COLLEGE $9.7 million
Furthering our academic mission
The Loyola Clinical Centers (LCC) is an expression of the
Jesuit mission in action, and of the inextricable link
between mind and heart at Loyola. In the LCC, students gain
exposure to cutting-edge interdisciplinary research and
superior training in speech-language pathology, audiology,
literacy education, pastoral counseling, and psychology
by providing services to local residents. Bright Minds, Bold
Hearts will help sustain the excellence of these programs
while subsidizing fees for underprivileged clients. The
campaign will also support the development of the Brain
Injury program, which will provide cost-effective care to
brain-injured clients while expanding research and training
opportunities for faculty and students.
Loyola College is at the center of Loyola’s mission to produce ethical, broadly knowledgeable,
and highly capable graduates. The campaign will further the College’s efforts to cultivate
a learning environment ideally suited to this mission. Gift opportunities include scholarships for
undergraduates with a special focus on crucial fields such as computer science, engineering,
and physics; fellowships for graduate students who will contribute to exciting research pursuits;
and endowed professorships, research leaves, and professional development opportunities
for faculty.
Leading progress in urban schools
Global Studies is an innovative interdisciplinary major at Loyola that enables students to study
diverse cultures and global issues from a multitude of perspectives—economic, sociological, historical,
and political. With gifts to the Bright Minds, Bold Hearts campaign, we are growing this exciting new
program significantly by funding a Global Studies chair, interdisciplinary research projects and course
development, and a globally focused speaker series. Expanding the program benefits Global Studies
majors and improves cultural literacy and global awareness across the entire Loyola community.
SCHOOL OF EDUCATION $4.85 million
Our School of Education not only prepares graduates
to be excellent teachers—it is also emerging as a highly
regarded thought leader in urban education. Bright
Minds, Bold Hearts will support a variety of initiatives at
the School focused on improving teaching methods
locally and nationally. These include funding a faculty
program chair to lead Loyola’s Center for Innovation
in Urban Education, supporting innovative translational
research, and attracting promising graduate students
poised to transform lives by improving educational
outcomes.
Mission and Ministry $2 million
Fostering Ignatian spirituality
Through retreats, educational programs, immersion trips,
and more, Mission and Ministry connects our community to
Jesuit principles—ensuring Ignatian ideals are incorporated
into coursework and that faculty, students, and staff can
explore questions of faith and spirituality with depth and
guidance. Bright Minds, Bold Hearts will seek funding to
endow Mission and Ministry retreat programs, ensuring that
all students can benefit from spiritual retreats regardless
of their ability to pay.
Annual Fund $22.885 Million
Meeting Loyola’s immediate needs
York Road Initiative $400,000
Strengthening our local community
The York Road Initiative brings together students and faculty from throughout
the University as well as alumni, businesses, and community organizations
interested in creating a safer, healthier, vibrant, and prosperous York Road
commercial district. Bright Minds, Bold Hearts adds to this effort by providing
funds to launch the York Road community development corporation,
whose director will design strategies and build partnerships to support York
Road’s revitalization and sustained success.
Annual giving is an important component of the campaign, giving every member of our
community the opportunity to make a meaningful difference regardless of how much they can
afford to give. Contributions to Loyola’s annual fund, the Evergreen Fund, ensure that the
University is well positioned to fund ongoing operational needs and unexpected opportunities
that arise over the course of the campaign, such as bringing a high-profile speaker to
campus or covering a sudden increase in energy costs. Unrestricted annual giving is the ultimate
acknowledgment that you trust Loyola to put your gift to the best possible use.
Total Campaign GOAL

“ When a client comes to our clinic, they get to see all of
their clinicians working together and receive all of their
services under one roof—often all in the same morning
or afternoon because of our integrated appointment
scheduling. It sounds simple, but it’s really cutting-edge
in the health care industry.” Christopher Higginson, ph.d.
Christopher Higginson, Ph.d.
Associate Professor of Psychology

The Loyola Clinical Centers (LCC) provides
high-quality, affordable care to underserved
members of the greater Baltimore community.
Following the Jesuit principle of cura personalis,
or “care for the whole person,” the LCC
offers integrated services in speech-language
pathology, audiology, literacy education,
pastoral counseling, and psychology. A seed
grant helped the LCC launch an innovative
interdisciplinary program for adults with brain
injuries and disorders, now in its second
year of operation.
“The clients we see are dealing with incredibly
complicated issues,” says Christopher Higginson,
Ph.D., an associate professor of psychology
at Loyola and the program’s neuropsychologist.
“They typically have language difficulties,
cognitive deficits, and psychological problems,
which is why our interdisciplinary model is
most appropriate.”
Combining speech-language pathology,
audiology, and neuropsychology, the LCC’s brain
injury and disorders program is designed
as a “one-stop shop” for clients dealing with
traumatic brain injury, stroke, and other
neurological disorders. Student interns in
Loyola’s master’s and doctoral programs play
a hands-on role, working alongside faculty
clinicians to assess and treat clients. “This is
a really unique opportunity for them,” says
Tom Thompson, CCC/SLP, program coordinator
and clinical instructor in speech-language
pathology. “Our students go on to their
externships with a lot more experience in
interdisciplinary care than students from
similar programs. It most certainly puts them
a step ahead.”
Contributions to the
Bright Minds, Bold Hearts
campaign will enable
the LCC to serve more
clients by helping
to subsidize reduced fees
for those in need and
endowing clinical faculty
positions and student
fellowships.

Gifts to the Evergreen Fund help close
the gap between tuition and the true
cost of a Loyola University Maryland
education. With your support, we
can meet vital operational needs and
provide an enriching whole-person
education for every student.
Despite the fact that her first visit to Loyola
University Maryland took place during a
snowstorm, Margaret Lee, ’14, knew after touring
campus that she’d found her school.
24 25 Bright Minds, Bold Hearts

Now a senior, Margaret has taken full advantage
of all the University has to offer—from studying
abroad in Newcastle, England, to working
with faculty to craft an interdisciplinary degree
in visual arts and communication. “Her entire
experience at Loyola has been incredible,” says
Margaret’s mother, Cindy Lee.
Having been involved with the board of trustees
at their alma mater, both Cindy and her
husband, John, know how important annual
giving is—especially for private liberal artsbased
universities like Loyola. They made
their first donation to the Loyola Evergreen Fund
when Margaret was a first-year student
and have given consistently since, increasing
their gift each year.
In honor of the Bright Minds, Bold Hearts
campaign, Cindy and John are planning a special
five-year gift that will support the day-to-day
needs of Loyola through the Evergreen Fund as
well as specific campus ministry initiatives.
“We decided to support two areas within the
University because we understand that annual
giving plays a vital role in Loyola’s financial
viability, but we also wanted to contribute to
something that we’re passionate about,”
explains John. “Campus ministry is near and
dear to our hearts.”
