So when it was suggested to him recently at Heathrow Airport during his first formal engagement as captain for 2016 that he might put a call in to Steven Gerrard, his eyes lit up at the prospect. Gerrard will be playing for Los Angeles Galaxy when Clarke’s team jets in to Hazeltine in Minnesota. The stars seem to be aligned. “LA is not that close to Minnesota, so we will see,” Clarke said. “We’ll see.” You could almost hear the cogs in his brain whirring at the possibility. “Paul got a lot of help from different people who have been in that position of managing people and looking after people and I will be the same. There are a few people that I am thinking about. He (Gerrard) is a real legend. If I were to do something like that, he would be someone I would consider.” The new slimline Clarke, as opposed to the roly-poly version that won the 2011 Open at Royal St George’s, is off the Guinness and in the gym. He was dapper and relaxed in his navy blue suit with the Ryder Cup crest on the breast pocket. With his closely cropped George Clooney silver-fox beard, he could have been mistaken for a fashion catalogue model. The ultimate team player is now management and coming to terms with all the responsibilities that come with the job. Don’t expect to see him downing a pint of the Black Stuff on the clubhouse balcony should his team make it seven wins out of eight matches this century for Europe over the USA... When you were vice-captain at Celtic Manor in 2010, you joked you were in charge of the Guinness. Do you have to leave all that behind now that you are captain? I was fat then!
