Propert reunion
goes with a swing
Pianist Tom Cobb, played The Shy
Puppet by Bohuslav Martinu
Current members of
Propert House pulled out
all the stops this term to make
the Propert House Reunion a
memorable event for all
concerned.
The reunion was attended by
150 guests with associations with
Propert House dating as far back
as 1936. Many current House
members were on hand to
welcome guests and give guided
tours of the facilities.
A highlight of the day was an
amusing speech about current life
in the House given by M4 pupils
Tom Simpson and Nick Sadler.
Noting that former Housemaster
and current Deputy Head John
Hartley had once described
Propert as being “good at nothing”,
they countered, “Well we would
like to take that one step further
and say we are good at nothing –
but great at everything!
“The M4s have very successful
House athletics, hockey and rugby
teams, we have some talented
musicians, talented speakers,
EPSOM LIFE
talented cricketers, talented
design people, practiced actors
and some very smart people who
make up our M4 year,” they said.
One of those talented M4
musicians, saxophonist James
Moreton, performed for guests in
Big School, playing Allegro from
the Sonata in G Minor by Bach. He
was accompanied by L6th formers
Philip Longhurst, who sang The
Impossible Dream, and pianist Tim
Cobb, who played The Shy Puppet
by Bohuslav Martinu.
“It was a great pleasure to see
that Propert House continues to
nurture such impressive young
people,” one returning OE said.
“I was delighted with the way
that Tom Simpson and Nick Sadler
rose to the task of addressing so
many Old Propertians with a mix
of observations and humour about
life at Epsom today.They were
superbly supported by three
outstanding musicians in Philip
Longhurst, James Moreton and
Tim Cobb," said current Propert
Housemaster Andy Wolstenholme.
Left to right:Andy Brooks,William Broad
and Hector Martin were among a group
of cadets from the Epsom College CCF,
who were guests at the Lord Mayor's Big
Curry Evening, held at the Guildhall in
London. Sponsored by the City of London
and the Army Benevolent Fund (ABF),
the event brought together some 100
adult instructors and 300 cadets from all
three services, together with members
of the Scouts and the St John Ambulance
service. The focus of the evening was to
make those present more aware of the
work carried out by the ABF on behalf
of injured military personnel and their
families and to encourage them to
organise fundraising events of their own
L6TH LEADERSHIP DAY
Having just returned to the College from
study leave after completing their AS level
exams, L6th form students took part in a
Leadership Training Day to prepare them
for life in the U6th next term.
During the morning, Housemasters and
Housemistresses led students in Housebased
activities, with various scenarios and
role-plays, involving organisational and
aptitude tasks, played out in small groups.
In the afternoon, they enjoyed a visit to
Arena Pursuits, a team-building and
outdoor pursuits centre in Flimwell, East
Sussex.Working in mixed House and gender
Raft building was one of the tasks
undertaken by L6th pupils during
their Leadership Training Day
groups under the guidance of an instructor,
they took part in a variety of challenging
but fun exercises, including raft building,
safely crossing a minefield in the shortest
time possible, an obstacle course and pot
on a pole – mounting a bucket part-filled
with water on the top of a pole and leaving
it there with nothing attached.
“This was an excellent team-building and
leadership experience for the L6th.The
weather was amazing, which helped those
who were not very good at building rafts
after they were tipped into the canal!” said
Rosebery Housemistress Natasha Wilson.
