Girls’ tour to Australia<br />
and S<strong>in</strong>gapore<br />
Asummer tour to Australia and<br />
S<strong>in</strong>gapore proved a valuable preseason<br />
experience for the <strong>College</strong> senior<br />
hockey and netball squads.<br />
Two hockey teams played a total <strong>of</strong><br />
12 matches aga<strong>in</strong>st opposition rang<strong>in</strong>g<br />
from ladies club sides to school teams.<br />
Despite some early <strong>in</strong>juries, the girls won<br />
seven out <strong>of</strong> 12 games, with the A team<br />
outperform<strong>in</strong>g their opposition on many<br />
occasions and w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g five <strong>of</strong> their six<br />
matches.<br />
In netball, three teams went on tour and<br />
played a total <strong>of</strong> 17 games, w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g eight,<br />
draw<strong>in</strong>g two and los<strong>in</strong>g seven. Play<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />
some impressive <strong>in</strong>door arenas, they faced<br />
particularly strong opposition <strong>in</strong> Australia,<br />
where netball is a major sport for women.<br />
Outside <strong>of</strong> the hectic play<strong>in</strong>g schedule,<br />
the party sampled local <strong>life</strong> with a Night<br />
Safari and a visit to Sentosa <strong>in</strong> S<strong>in</strong>gapore, a<br />
trip to see the Phillip Island pengu<strong>in</strong>s <strong>in</strong><br />
Melbourne, jet boat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Sydney<br />
Harbour, white water raft<strong>in</strong>g on the Baron<br />

Led by <strong>College</strong> teachers Fi Dr<strong>in</strong>kall,<br />
Lizzie Irv<strong>in</strong>e and Katie Cloonan, the girls<br />
were jo<strong>in</strong>ed on tour by many parents who<br />
took the opportunity to support the<br />
players whilst meet<strong>in</strong>g up with family,<br />
friends and OEs liv<strong>in</strong>g overseas.<br />
The U4 party on<br />
tour <strong>in</strong> Ed<strong>in</strong>burgh<br />
Bravehearts <strong>in</strong> Ed<strong>in</strong>burgh<br />
A total <strong>of</strong> 32 boys from the U4 year group together with parents and staff<br />
spent three days <strong>in</strong> Ed<strong>in</strong>burgh at the end <strong>of</strong> August enjoy<strong>in</strong>g some pre-season<br />
rugby tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and play<strong>in</strong>g aga<strong>in</strong>st two <strong>of</strong> Scotland’s top rugby schools.<br />
Stay<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a youth hostel, the players were able to make use <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Ed<strong>in</strong>burgh Academy sports fields for tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g prior to a match aga<strong>in</strong>st the<br />
school.The two <strong>Epsom</strong> sides put <strong>in</strong> a great performance with the A team<br />
w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g 33-12 and the B team a resound<strong>in</strong>g 95-0.<br />
The follow<strong>in</strong>g day, the two <strong>College</strong> sides played George Watson’s <strong>College</strong><br />
and despite the opposition be<strong>in</strong>g considerably stronger, both teams came<br />
away with victories, the A team w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g 19-12 and the B team 15-10.<br />
The party also enjoyed cultural tours around Ed<strong>in</strong>burgh, tak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the Castle,<br />
the Royal Mile, Hollyrood Palace, the Scottish Parliament and, the highlight<br />
<strong>of</strong> the tour, the Murrayfield rugby stadium, the home <strong>of</strong> Scottish rugby.<br />
RUGBY BOYS IN<br />
SOUTH AMERICA<br />
A rugby tour to Chile, Paraguay and<br />
Argent<strong>in</strong>a <strong>in</strong> August saw the 1st and 2nd XV<br />
squads enjoy some tough physical encounters<br />
and hard fought, close matches whilst<br />
experienc<strong>in</strong>g new cultures.<br />
The Argent<strong>in</strong>eans <strong>in</strong> particular lived up to<br />
their reputation as the best scrummagers and<br />
maulers <strong>in</strong> the world, test<strong>in</strong>g the rugby skills<br />
<strong>of</strong> the <strong>College</strong> squads.<br />
Nevertheless, the 1st XV returned a<br />
score sheet <strong>of</strong> four w<strong>in</strong>s, one draw and one<br />
loss, whilst the 2nd XV had three w<strong>in</strong>s and<br />
three defeats.<br />
The player <strong>of</strong> the tour award went to<br />
flanker Tom Lothian, with notable mentions<br />
for Josh Li,Tom Brown,Tim Facc<strong>in</strong>i and<br />
capta<strong>in</strong> Rhodri Needham.<br />
The party had the opportunity to take part<br />
<strong>in</strong> some outstand<strong>in</strong>g trips, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g sightsee<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>in</strong> the Andes <strong>in</strong> Chile, a trip to the waterfalls<br />
at Iguazu, and a visit to the La Boca barrios <strong>in</strong><br />
Buenos Aires.They also spent two days be<strong>in</strong>g<br />
‘gauchos’ on a ranch outside Cordoba.<br />
