Keying Descriptions
“Keyed Different” - Each lock has an independant cut. (Can also be incorporated into a custom keyed system)
“Keyed Alike” - Group of two or more locks with the same key cut. (Can also be incorporated into a custom
keyed system)
“Construction Keyed” [a.k.a. Protecto Keyed (PK) / Builder Keyed] - Temporary builder keyed system used during
the construction phase. (We employ the “lost ball” method of construction keying)
“Construction Master Keyed” - Combination of a construction key system and permanent master
keyed system.
“Keyed Common” or “Keyed to Pass” - Lockset is keyed in a manner such that several random change keys
(user) are able to pass through a common area.
“Master Keyed” - Simple two level system; A group of locks (KD, KA or both) that are operated by a change (user)
key and a single master key.
“Grand Master Keyed” - Three level system where one GMK (grand master key) opens all locks. Sub-master key
(MK) only opens locks within its assigned group. All individual locks have their own random change (user) key.
“Great Grand Master Keyed” - Four level sytem where on GGMK (great grand master key) opens all locks in the
keyed system. Two different GMKs (grand master keys) open only specific locks in system. Two or more MKs
(sub-master) only open assigned locks under their assigned GMK. All locks have their own random change (user)
key. Note: this type of system limits security.
Prepared to accept a Small Format Interchangable Core (SFIC).
Locks shipped “Less Cylinder”
Lock built with “Zero Bitted Cylinder” packed with two key blanks.
Controlled Cross Keying
A condition in which two or more different keys of the same level of keying and under the same higher level key(s) operate one
cylinder by design; e.g., XAA1 operated by AA2 (but not XAA1 operated by AB1)
Uncontrolled Cross Keying
A condition in which two or more different keys under different higher level keys operate one cylinder by design; e.g., XAA1 operated
by AB, AB1
NOTE: This condition could severely limit the security of the cylinder and the maximum expansion of the system when (1) more
than a few of these different keys operate a cylinder, or (2) more than a few differently cross keyed cylinders per system are required.
Uncontrolled Cross Keying is not recommended and often leads to key interchange.
* 6 pin keying is standard. KW can also be ordered with 5-pin option to match residential products.
** These multi-level keying systems may be limited when being requested with a 5-pin system.
