Global leader in implantable

has marked Hearing Awareness
Week late in August by announcing
the results of new research
that suggests hearing loss may
be associated with accelerated
cognitive decline and cognitive
impairment.
“Individuals having hearing
loss demonstrated a 30 to 40 per
cent accelerated rate of cognitive
decline and a 24 per cent increased
risk for incident cognitive
impairment during a six-year
period, compared with individuals
having normal hearing,” said
Dr Frank Lin, from the US John
Hopkins Center on Aging and
Health, commenting on his study
published earlier this year.
“Hearing loss should not be
taken for granted. The better we
hear, the more mentally sharp we
are. What we do know and see
is that hearing loss in the elderly
magnifies the negative impact of
the mental ageing process.”

saw the launch of Cochlear’s new
Baha® DermaLochTM technology,
which helps people receiving
Baha bone conduction products
by allowing shorter procedure
times, faster healing and improved
cosmetic results.
According to Cochlear,
approximately 400,000 people
in Australia could benefit from a
Cochlear Baha bone conduction
implant system, which consists of a
small titanium implant that bonds
to the bone behind the ear. A
sound processor is then attached
to the Baha implant to detect
sound, and sound is transferred
through the bone to reach the
inner ear, bypassing the damaged
outer or middle ear.
The system uses a special coating
technology – hydroxyapatite – to
better integrate the device to
the recipient’s skin, which helps
simplify the surgical procedure,
for faster healing and improved
cosmetic results.
