Biographies Feature
Adult Role Models
High School sophomores selected a role model, an adult
who had a major impact on their lives, and wrote a biography
of that person in their Honors English class. The students
then hosted a reception on May 12, 2011, to honor the
individuals they wrote about and present them with a written
copy of their biography. Pictured is sophomore Oleg Chubko

Student Named Gold
Medalist for Citizenship
West Allegheny High School senior Victoria Williams was
selected by an independent panel of judges as one of the top
ten gold-medalists for the South and West regions in the
Pittsburgh Tribune Review’s Outstanding Young Citizens
program at a banquet held on April 28, 2011. The ten finalists
were individually commended for their accomplishments,
presented with gold medals, and recognized in an article and a
congratulatory ad in the April 28, 2011, issue of the newspaper.
According to the Tribune-Review, the program “recognizes
young people for giving back to their communities and
demonstrating exemplary character and academic achievement.”
David Johnson of WPXI-TV Channel 11 was the keynote
speaker.
Victoria and two other West Allegheny seniors, Alexis Johns
and Kellie Gervas, were among the top 100 candidates
nominated by their schools based on their character, academic
performance, and community service involvement.
All nominees were included in a special section of the
newspaper featuring their photographs and biographies on
Sunday, April 24, 2011.
West Allegheny Senior Qualifies
for National FBLA Competition
At the Future Business Leaders of
America (FBLA) State Leadership
Conference in Hershey, Pennsylvania,
April 4-6, 2011, West Allegheny High
School senior Victoria Williams took
second place in the Client Services
category to qualify for the FBLA
National Leadership Conference in
Orlando, Florida in June 2011. This is the
third consecutive year that someone
from the West Allegheny Chapter of
FBLA has qualified to represent the state
of Pennsylvania at the national level.
Other FBLA members placing in the top
ten at the State Competition included
Jordan Grogan (fourth place, HTML),
Brandon McCracken (fourth place,
Leadership), and the following students
working in teams: Anthony Marucci and
Jonathan Lazarowicz (third place,
Computer Game and Simulation Program-
ming), Dave Kline, Kristen Rohm,
Grace Shields, Josi Sinagoga, and
Shannon Ye (fourth place, Parliamentary
Procedure), and Joey Falcioni
and Jordan Grogan (fourth place, E-
Business).
Also representing West Allegheny
at the state conference were Shubhi
Bakliwal, Derek Faix, Andrew Frank,
Kellie Gervas, Logan Himich, Drew
Honeychuck, Sarah Kidder, Robyn
Lutz, Jesse Nauman, Robert Petrick,
and Christian Rodak. West Allegheny
students were among the 3,800
members who qualified for the
competition in Hershey out of 14,000
FBLA members across the state.
FBLA faculty advisors Dan Marshall
and Pam Volakis coordinated the trip
with help from Chris Lucas, Barb
Lecker, and Julie McGough.
