The first Highlanders athletics program<br />

to win a national championship is <strong>UCR</strong>’s<br />

1977 baseball team, going 43-19. In the<br />

title game, the Highlanders defeated<br />

Eckerd College, 4-1.<br />

Highlanders made up this first<br />

class of inductees. They are<br />

water polo), Jack Clarke Jr.<br />

(karate), Amy Harrison<br />

(softball, volleyball,<br />

basketball, tennis, track &<br />

field), Butch Johnson<br />

(football, track & field), Pete<br />

Kettela (baseball, football,<br />

basketball), Howard Lee<br />

(men’s basketball), Eric Show<br />

(baseball) and Mavis<br />

Washington (women’s<br />

basketball, women’s<br />

volleyball).<br />
