Henrik H. Sørensen: <strong>Esoteric</strong> <strong>Buddhism</strong> <strong>under</strong> <strong>the</strong> Koryŏ<br />

H<strong>in</strong>du beliefs and practices provided <strong>the</strong> greater religious <strong>in</strong>put. Here I<br />

should like to note that I dist<strong>in</strong>guish between <strong>Esoteric</strong> <strong>Buddhism</strong> and<br />

Tantric <strong>Buddhism</strong>. While <strong>the</strong> former is a general designation for a wide<br />

variety <strong>of</strong> practices and beliefs that came about alongside <strong>the</strong><br />

development <strong>of</strong> Mah2y2na <strong>Buddhism</strong> as such, <strong>the</strong> latter arose as a<br />

dist<strong>in</strong>ct form <strong>of</strong> <strong>Esoteric</strong> <strong>Buddhism</strong> based on a dist<strong>in</strong>ct corpus <strong>of</strong><br />

literature, namely <strong>the</strong> Tantras, which features a dist<strong>in</strong>ct <strong>in</strong>terpretation <strong>of</strong><br />

Mah2y2na doctr<strong>in</strong>es and practices. 3 The def<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g characteristics <strong>of</strong><br />

Tantric <strong>Buddhism</strong> is <strong>the</strong> way <strong>in</strong> which <strong>the</strong> path to enlightenment is<br />

def<strong>in</strong>ed. Contrary to traditional Mah2y2na where ant<strong>in</strong>omian practices<br />

are universally banned due to <strong>the</strong>ir conflict with <strong>the</strong> bodhisattva ideal,<br />

<strong>the</strong>y are openly endorsed and encouraged <strong>in</strong> Tantric <strong>Buddhism</strong>,<br />

although on more advanced levels <strong>of</strong> practice. Moreover, Tantric<br />

<strong>Buddhism</strong> features a high degree <strong>of</strong> doctr<strong>in</strong>al and ritual systematization<br />

which is not reflected <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> earlier <strong>Esoteric</strong> Buddhist material.<br />

Hence, <strong>Esoteric</strong> <strong>Buddhism</strong> is here used as a general term for <strong>the</strong><br />

phenomena outl<strong>in</strong>ed above, while Tantric <strong>Buddhism</strong> is <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> a<br />

later and dist<strong>in</strong>ctive type <strong>of</strong> <strong>Esoteric</strong> <strong>Buddhism</strong> (Snellgrove: 160-176).<br />

When this has been said it is also important to note that Tantric<br />

<strong>Buddhism</strong> is <strong>the</strong> religious and historical <strong>in</strong>heritor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Esoteric</strong><br />

Buddhist tradition. In o<strong>the</strong>r words, many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> diverse practices and<br />

types <strong>of</strong> belief which are found <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> earlier tradition <strong>in</strong> embryonic or<br />

partly developed forms eventually found <strong>the</strong>ir full expressions <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Tantric Buddhist systems.<br />

When look<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> general history <strong>of</strong> <strong>Esoteric</strong> <strong>Buddhism</strong> <strong>in</strong> East<br />

Asia <strong>the</strong>re are certa<strong>in</strong> features which need clarification. <strong>Esoteric</strong><br />

Buddhist practices and beliefs entered Ch<strong>in</strong>a as part and parcel <strong>of</strong><br />

Mah2y2na <strong>Buddhism</strong>. For which reason <strong>Esoteric</strong> <strong>Buddhism</strong> was <strong>in</strong>itially<br />

not seen as a dist<strong>in</strong>ct tradition, nor was it orig<strong>in</strong>ally endorsed outside<br />

<strong>the</strong> conf<strong>in</strong>es <strong>of</strong> traditional <strong>Buddhism</strong>. Fur<strong>the</strong>rmore, as <strong>the</strong> formal carrier<br />

<strong>of</strong> ritual and methods <strong>of</strong> magic, <strong>Esoteric</strong> <strong>Buddhism</strong> found an easy<br />

3 The ma<strong>in</strong> Tantras are <strong>the</strong> Hevajra, <strong>the</strong> Cakrasamvara, <strong>the</strong> Guhyasam2jatantrar2ja, <strong>the</strong> K2lacakra etc.<br />

For a general discussion <strong>of</strong> this class <strong>of</strong> literature and its doctr<strong>in</strong>es, see Snellgrove (144-159).
