EBSCOhost eBooks
Yes, EBSCO has eBooks. Find them on the databases page under “Literature &
Books.” There are thousands of books available in a variety of subject areas. Outside
the library a library card number/last name/alternate ID combination will be required to
access the database. Creating an account is encouraged to take advantage of some
of the features.
Browse by category or search
to find books. Basic searching
is probably going to be your
preferred method. An advanced
search is also available. Once
you have search results you
can limit them using the menus
on the left. Helpful limits
include: date range, subject,
and category.
There are plenty of useful tools. Books can be saved to a folder for use later. Sections
of books can be emailed or saved. The “cite” feature makes it easy to find out how to
write the citation for the resources you’re using in the style you’d like. There is also a
dictionary, the ability to search within the text, and the ability to create notes
throughout the book.
Once you've selected a book
you don’t need to check it out,
since that is not a feature. Just
click on “PDF Full Text” to
begin reading books in your
browser. There is an option to
download portions of a book as
a PDF but it is a limited amount
of material, typically between 6
-30 pages. Browser reading on
a computer is a little clunky. It is much better on a mobile device. Not all books have
been digitized equally. Some look like books with full-size pages and easy-to-read
text, and others look like mini versions of books or giant unformatted blocks of text.
Thankfully there are helpful zoom buttons.
