Founded in 1947, the Greater Derry Londonderry Chamber 

of Commerce is the largest and most influential business 

organization in the Derry-Londonderry area.

What is the Greater Derry Londonderry 

Region all about? 

From high-tech manufacturing facilities to charming 

village centers to picturesque orchards, the Derry-Londonderry 

region has something for everyone. 

With a combined 2013 population of 97,098, the seven 

communities that comprise the region each have their own 

unique personalities and, together, offer an array of housing 

styles and ways of life. What they all have in common, however, 

is a high quality of life: excellent schools, low crime, and an 

abundance of restaurants, shops, and other amenities. 

Over the centuries, everyone from Revolutionary War 

hero Major General John Stark to Pulitzer Prize-winning poet

Auburn 

The Town of Auburn, population 

4,953, provides a perfect setting that 

mixes rural living with the serene 

beauty of nature. Auburn is 12 miles 

east of Manchester, the state’s largest 

city — close enough to take advantage

Chester 

Chester, population 4,768, is a small, semi-rural bedroom 

community. Chester Center, located at the intersection of 

NH Routes 102 and 121, is the geographic center of the 

community, and remains little changed from a hundred 

years ago, and is still the commercial and civic center of the 

community. Chester Center is a landmark, with National 

Historic Sites (Village Church, Village Cemetery, and 

Stevens Memorial Hall) on three of the four corners.

Hampstead 

Hampstead is rich in history and often described as a 

picture postcard town with an elegant historic Main Street, 

characterized by antique colonial homes. Hampstead contains 

13.4 square miles of land, or approximately 8,350 acres, 400 

of which are inland water areas of Big Island Pond, Sunset 

Lake, and Angle Pond. The lakes attract a significant seasonal 

population and summer youth camp to town.

Derry 

The largest community in the region, and the fourthlargest 

municipality in the state, the Town of Derry is home 

to 33,109 residents. Boasting the region’s only downtown, 

Derry is also home to one of the oldest private schools in 

the nation, Pinkerton Academy, founded in 1814. Derry was 

also the home to astronaut Alan Shepard and poet Robert 

Frost. The town boasts a wide array of recreational and 

entertainment amenities, including Beaver Lake, the Derry 

Rail Trail, and the Derry Opera House.

Londonderry 

Londonderry, population 24,129, was chartered in 1722. 

Since that time residents, elected and appointed officials, 

and town staff have worked hard to maintain Londonderry’s 

enviable quality of life by supporting an excellent school 

system, preserving thousands of acres of open space, and 

encouraging land use practices to promote a healthy suburban 

lifestyle. 

Londonderry is also a haven for economic opportunity as 

host of the Manchester-Boston Regional Airport as well as the 

Town’s proximity to Interstate 93, the Everett Turnpike (Route

Windham 

Windham is a thriving community with a current population 

of 13,592. Windham offers excellent educational, recreational, 

and business opportunities. Local access to I-93 and other major 

routes provides ease in commuting to Boston, Manchester-Boston 

Regional Airport, the Seacoast, and the White Mountains. As 

a community, Windham consistently maintains its rural, open

Connecting the region 

Granite State Rail Trail a tourist draw and economic engine 

On a beautiful afternoon in June 2013, Melanie Davis and 

Carmel Shea were at the end of their bicycle ride on the Derry 

Rail Trail. Hungry and thirsty, the two friends looked around 

downtown Derry for some place they might be able to grab a 

snack and an iced coffee. 

And while they saw plenty of great restaurants and lunch 

spots in downtown Derry, Davis and Shea said they didn’t 

see any coffee shops, or any other downtown establishments 

where they would be comfortable entering clad in bike gear and 

carrying their helmets. 

Davis said at that time both she and Shea were at a crossroads 

in their respective careers. So in true entrepreneurial fashion, the 

two set out to solve the problem that they encountered. 

Such was the spark for the opening, nearly a year later, of The 

Grind Rail Trail Cafe, a community-focused, bicycle-themed 

specialty coffee bar in historic downtown Derry that offers 

organic coffee, smoothies, and protein drinks as well as healthy 

snacks, like granola and fruit cups, that cater to the needs of 

bicyclists and other outdoor enthusiasts. 

Since opening in the spring of 2014, however, The Grind has 

found it has appeal beyond the bicycling community. Indeed, 

the two said, winter is their busiest season, attracting crosscountry 

skiers, snowshoers, and snowmobilers who use the rail 

trail in colder months. The coffee shop-cum-community hub is 

also popular with employees at the Derry Municipal Center, as 

well as area residents who have never set foot on the trail. 

But it is the rail trail that provided, and continues to provide, 

economic stimulus, not just to The Grind, but to much of 

downtown Derry and surrounding communities. 

Technically speaking, the Derry Rail Trail is but a part of 

the larger Granite State Rail Trail, which stretches more than 

100 miles, from Salem, N.H., on the Massachusetts border, 

north and west to Lebanon, N.H., on the Vermont border. At 

approximately eight miles in length, the combined Derry Rail 


Trail and Windham Rail Trail is the 

longest paved section of the Granite 

State Rail Trail, and the longest section 

of paved abandoned rail corridor in New 

Hampshire. 

From Derry, the trail continues north 

into Londonderry, which currently has 

a one-mile section of trail paved, from 

North Elementary School to the North 

Londonderry Park & Ride, located just 

off I-93 Exit 5. An additional section of 

the trail, from the Park & Ride to Liberty 

Drive, stretching east toward Derry, will 

be paved in the spring of 2015. 

The greater Derry-Londonderry 

section of the Granite State Rail trail is 

located along the former Manchester and 

Lawrence line, built in the mid-1800s 

by the now-defunct Boston & Maine 

Railroad. The last train to operate on the 

branch line ran in the early 1970s, and 

the rails themselves were removed for 

salvage in the early 1980s. From that 

time until the early 2000s, the abandoned 

rail corridor operated as multi-use trail. 

In 2003, however, the State of New 

Hampshire prohibited motorized vehicles 

from using the trail.

Sections of the trail then began to 

be paved in 2006 using, in true New 

Hampshire fashion, predominantly private 

funds to complete the paving. 

2006 also saw the opening of the 

“kitchen” portion of the Windham 

Junction Country Gift Shop & Kitchen, 

just a stone’s throw from the trail. Kay 

Normington, who operates the store and 

restaurant with her husband Jon, said the 

business has certainly benefited from its 

proximity to the trail and the pedestrian 

and bicycle traffic it attracts.

“You can’t see us from the trail itself, but we get a lot of 

word-of-mouth referrals from people on the trail who tell others 

on the trail about us,” she said. 

Trail users might come in for an ice cream cone or a coffee at 

first, but Normington finds her number of repeat customers from 

the trail to be increasing. 

“It’s not uncommon for us to have people eat breakfast here, 

then go for a ride or walk on the trail for a few hours, and come 

right back here for lunch,” she said. 

Recognizing the benefit of the trail to the business, Windham 

Junction Country Gift Shop & Kitchen has sponsored a section 

of the trail and also sells trail maps, proceeds of which benefit 

trail maintenance and expansion. 

The mainly flat Derry-Windham Rail Trail, which stretches 

from Hood Park in Derry to the intersection of Route 111 

and Route 28 near the Windham-Salem town line, takes users 

through a variety of bucolic landscapes, including the shops 

and restaurants located in Derry’s charming downtown and 

residential areas, and alongside marshes and ponds, traveling 

mostly through shaded wooded areas. 

“You really feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere,” said 

Derry Rail Trail Alliance Vice President Mark Connors. 

Indeed, those on the trail stand a good chance of seeing some 

of the abundant wildlife common along the trail, including duck, 

geese, beavers, heron, deer, owls, turtles, and fisher cats.

“Bicyclists, walkers, dog walkers, runners, kids, seniors, 

cross-country skiers, and snowshoers — the trail has something 

for everyone,” Connors said. 

All of this makes the Derry-Windham section of the Granite 

State Rail Trail a popular destination year-round. And it’s not 

just locals who are making use of the trail. The Grind’s Davis 

said she recently had a customer from

Connecticut tell her he drove all the way from The Nutmeg State to 

the Derry-Londonderry region just to ride on the trail. 

“That gentleman came in to grab a coffee after his ride, and then 

said he was going to grab supper at a restaurant in town before 

heading back home,” Davis said. “The word is getting out about 

how great the rail trail is, and that’s good for business.” 

And business is sure to increase for The Grind, Windham 

Junction Country Gift Shop & Kitchen, and other businesses 

located near the trail as its paved sections continue to expand, 

which will attract more users. An additional quarter mile of of 

trail will be paved this spring in Windham, which will connect to 

the Salem portion of the trail, and from there into Massachusetts. 

And as mentioned above, an additional section of the trail in 

Londonderry will be paved in the spring of 2015. 

As for Davis and Shea at The Grind, they’re preparing to benefit 

from this increased bicycle-related economic development made 

possible by the rail trail. 

“We’re planning an outdoor dining space and are getting some 

bike racks,” said Shea.
