“During my Occupational Engagement and
Reflective Period I had the opportunity to
work with a PhD student on their research
about Body Image. [The PhD student] was
very supportive, and from working with him
my confidence in carrying out research has
greatly improved. [The PhD student] was
running focus group sessions, and helped
guide me to be able to run my own sessions.
For the first one [the PhD student] was
present, and encouraged me to then reflect
on the session and gave me tips on
improving. For the transcribing part of the
research, also gave some tips on how to most
effectively transcribe things which was really
helpful. I also learnt about recruiting
participants and how challenging this can be!
I was able to continue working on the project
for a while after the 2 weeks ended so further
developed my research skills.
Through this experience my own skills have
been developed enabling me to carry out my
own research in my FYP this year with the
guidance of my supervisor. It made me
realise how much I enjoyed research, and
now I am planning to continue my studies
further, hopefully undertaking an MSc”.

“I chose Real World Psychology as my year 2
elective because I wanted the opportunity to
work with a visiting professional in their field.
The module itself was a fantastic way to learn
about three separate and distinct forms of
real world psychology and I got the chance to
improve my own skills and competencies
through exciting and challenging tasks set
and guided by the visiting professional. The
module definitely broadened my knowledge
base and gave me an introduction into
networking professionally. I learned about the
application of my degree in a relation to a
real business; and the insight afforded to me
by the visiting professional was invaluable in
helping me plan my future”.
