ATTRACTIONS
June/July 2015
Volume XXXVII, No. 10
Three-year-old Emma, above, had a blast at our 2015 Community Yom Ha’atzmaut Celebration on
Sunday, April 26. Over 1,100 people celebrated Israel Independence Day at the St. Paul JCC with live
performances by the Heilicher Minneapolis Jewish Day School choir, the Chai Notes, and local musician
Matt Leavit, as well as Krav Maga, Israeli cooking and Israeli dancing demonstrations. On top of that, our
backyard transformed into a family-fun paradise, with face-painting, crazy hair, crafts, bounce houses, and
a Mini-Israel exhibit. Everyone was kept well-fed by delicious food vendors Vitali’s Bistro, Nothing Bundt
Cake, Rita’s, Menchie’s, Delicious Knishes from Sholom Auxiliary, and Hunger Haven. For more pictures of
the day, turn to page 13.

executive notes
Around this time last year, the St. Paul JCC celebrated 50 years
on St. Paul Avenue. This year, we begin building the framework
for 50 more. On Wednesday, June 17 at 7 PM, join JCC
community and staff members at our 85th Annual Meeting. The
meeting will be part planning and part party, as we look back on
all we’ve accomplished and look forward to all we’ve yet to do.
Among other items of business, we’ll be welcoming a new group
of Directors to serve on our Board. New members include
Michelle Shaller, Susan Tervola, Joel Denenholz, and Zalman
Bendet, with Laurie Goldfarb returning for a second term. Along
with welcoming these bright minds to the Board, we’ll hear an
update from current President of the Board Howard Orenstein.
During his first year as President, Howard’s innovative vision
has brought so much to our Center, and over the course of the
following year, that vision will continue to guide us as we embark
on exciting new projects.
As Howard begins his second and final year as President, I would
like to introduce our nominee for his successor: Bruce Fink,
CEO of Ernest I. Fink Agency. During his time as a member of
the Board, Bruce has shown an extraordinary passion for and
dedication to our JCC that I know he will bring to his future role
as President.
Along with being a time of celebration, the Annual Meeting
is also a time of gratitude, a time to thank all the amazing
individuals and families who make the J possible through
planned gifts to the JCC Endowment Fund. We truly would not
be the J we are today without the continued support of the
amazing members of our Generation to Generation Society. If
you’re interested in joining this important group, please contact
me. If you’re already a member, please join us for a special premeeting
reception beginning at 6 PM.
I’m beyond excited and honored to be able to share this amazing
night of celebration with you all, as we come together at the
2015 Annual Meeting to reflect on the past 50 years on St. Paul
Avenue and to lay the foundation for 50 more.
There’s something about this place.
JEWISH HOLIDAY
TISHA B’AV
TISHA B’AV
JULY 26 • 9TH OF AV
Tisha B’Av is a day of mourning that
commemorates the tragedies that have befallen
the Jewish people, many of which occurred on
the ninth of Av. This holiday — which this year
begins on the evening of Saturday, July 25
and ends on the evening of Sunday, July 26 —
primarily commemorates the destruction of the
first and second Temples, both of which were
destroyed (the first by the Babylonians in 586
B.C.E.; the second by the Romans in 70 C.E.).
Tisha B’Av also commemorates other historical
events that have occurred on this day, including
the edict of King Edward I, compelling the Jews
of England to leave the country in 1290, and
the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492.
Instituted by the rabbis of 2nd-century Palestine,
Tisha B’Av is regarded as the saddest day on the
Jewish calendar.
from published authors. In-class and take-home exercises give
students an opportunity to try out a variety of lyric essay techniques
and structures. The last several weeks of the class will be devoted
SUNDAY, JUNE 21 • 3 – 5:30 PM
We often experience the business and stress of our daily lives as a
kind of physical pressure, feeling restrictions in our breath, tension in
our jaw, a hardening in our chest or belly, a stiffness in our steps, and
general aches and pains in our bodies. In this workshop, Feldenkrais
Practitioners Beth Hartman and Nick Strauss-Klein lead an afternoon
of pleasurable explorations of movement, attention, and breath to help
us reclaim our natural internal spaciousness and skeletal support.
Please dress in layers and bring a bath towel to fold for head
support. Curious if this workshop is for you? Contact nick@
YOUTH & FAMILY PROGRAMS
SHE’S MARVELOUS!
This year’s recipient of the JCC’s $5,000 MARvelous Education
Scholarship is Samantha Agranoff. Samantha grew up in the J, and has
an impressive history of involvement to prove it! Graduating from our
preschool, she went on to participate in Youth Basketball, the Swim Team,
Youth Theater, camp, and the JCC Maccabi Games (3 times!) Additionally,
she has worked for Hunger Haven, Club J, Camp Butwin and as a Little
Dribblers coach.
Samantha graduated from Highland Park Senior High with a 3.97 GPA, and
spent the last year studying at the University of Kansas, where she plans
to pursue a degree in social work. In the future, her dream is to practice
social work, with a special focus on children and young adults.
Join us in congratulating Samantha on her wonderful achievements!
The MARvelous Fund was established by Dan & Amy Farsht and Steve & Stephanie Farsht
to honor their grandmother, Marion Farsht and great aunts Anita Marx and Rose Shapiro.
If you’re a JCC member or staff person planning to pursue higher education, mark your
calendar – applications for next year open January 1, 2016.
WELCOME OUR 2015 CAMP BUTWIN
ISRAELI SHLICHIM
Meet our 2015 shlichim, the Israeli instructors who will infuse the Camp Butwin
experience with Israeli ruach (spirit) and bring Israeli culture to campers!
NOFAR CHEN
DANCE & MOVEMENT SPECIALIST
From the city of Har Adar, near Jerusalem,
Nofar is excited to be our Dance & Movement
Specialist this summer. She has studied
and taught dance and drama since she
was a young child. She is excited to share
the happiness she finds in dance as well as
wonderful and fun new songs, games and
experiences with an Israeli flavor.
DAFNA (DAFI) CHEN
ARTS & CRAFTS SPECIALIST
Coming to us from our St. Paul Partnership
Together Region of the Sovev Kinneret, Dafi
enjoys life on her kibbutz Tel Katzeer. She
enjoyed an amazing experience as the Israeli
summer staff at the JCC Summer Camp in
Louisville, KY last summer. This year, she is
delighted to be our Omanut (Arts & Crafts)
Specialist.
Both Nofar & Dafi
Chen (same last
name, but not
related!) express a
love of working with
children and a strong
desire to bring Israel
to camp and St. Paul
this summer.
Please join us in
