Public and Professional Programs Boards of Education Gallery Programmer Laura Kinzel juried the submissions for the Bill Epp Memorial Scholarship for the Catholic School system on May 22. She also served as a juror for Aden Bowman Collegiate’s annual art fair. CARFAC Two workshops were held at the Mendel Art Gallery: Grant Writing for Artists on January 20 (Attendance: 26) and The Permanence of Artist Materials on March 22 and 23 (Attendance: 15). CERT In addition to attending and sometimes hosting bimonthly meetings, we regularly participate in the Toon Time advertising project offered through the Saskatoon Sun. The group produces posters, distributed twice a year, advertising our individual programs to the schools. It also publishes a guide to the programs developed by the members, sent to schools in September. Design Week From November 13–17 the Mendel hosted this annual exhibition and lecture series in the auditorium. The Mendel’s component included open houses for high schools, four lectures including the keynote address, and a bus tour of public art. Doors Open In conjunction with a larger city-wide initiative, the Mendel participated in the Doors Open program on Sunday, June 3. Intended to provide access to spaces in historical buildings that the public otherwise does not get to see, events included behind-the-scenes tours through our basement and storage areas, key staff stationed round the building for conversation, and a new handout. Four Mendel Board members and Director Terry Graff highlighted our need for renovations and expansion. Attendance: 375 overall; 120 toured behindthe-scenes Exposed: A Forum on Public Art The Mendel partnered on this three-day series of events that brought together leading artists, designers, curators, and civic administrators with extensive experience in public art commissions, to discuss the future of public art in Saskatoon. The events were located around the city, with the Mendel hosting the keynote speaker and Art Lab launch and bus tour. Musical and Theatrical Groups The 9th Annual Festival of Women’s Art Go Diva Hericane Festival, March 2–April 2 This festival featured emerging and established artists in the fields of performing, literary and visual arts. In partnership with 25th Street Theatre Inc., the Mendel hosted the exhibition of art by established artists and a lecture. The reception for the exhibition and lecture was held on March 9 at 7 pm. The show was held over for Juno weekend. Attendance for lecture: 70 Saskatoon Regional Youth Heritage Fair Laura Kinzel juried student displays on May 3 and 4 at the Nutana Curling Club. SCYAP Inc. Urban Canvas Project Saskatoon Community Youth Arts Programming Inc. (SCYAP) is a commercial arts skill enhancement/ acquisition community revitalization and beautification initiative for “at-risk” youth. Their mission is to use visual art and community bonding as the key focus for the personal development, empowerment, and redirection of “at-risk” youth to a healthy, happy, and productive life. Mendel staff continues to be invited to attend SCYAP openings events. We hosted the exhibition of the graduating class of SCYAP’s Urban Canvas VII program from December 3, 2007–January 7, 2008. Although each Plexus member is responsible for the maintenance of specific programs, it is the team that guides the overall direction. In 2007 the Plexus included ARTforLIFE Liaisons, the Head of Public and Professional Programs, Gallery Programmer, Program Facilitator, and Program Assistants. Members were also actively involved in a program audit of all their programs.
