TOUCHING
LIVES THROUGH
EDUCATION
Empowered and inventive, Indira
Yakthumba, founder of Gyanodaya School
has come a long way. By Shreya Sharma
Born
March 1945 to a military family in Burma.
Start of a new chapter
Got married to His Excellency Late Gyan
Bahadur Yakthumba at an age of 16 and moved
to Nepal.
Fighting spirit
Her husband’s demise left her heartbroken
but equally determined to do something on
her own.
Becoming an educator
Started Gyanodaya Bal Batika as a tribute to
her husband, and the school stands tall as a
full-fledged secondary school.
Empowering herself to educate
Returned from India after having finished her
Bachelor in Education all set to excel as an
educator.
Expanding the reach
Gyanodaya got recognition as a higher
secondary school spreading its reach,
one step at a time.
1999
Having been involved
in the education sector
for more than four
decades, Indira
Yakthumba has seen
the ups and downs and the
changes the Nepali education
system has gone through.
Hers is a story of finding the
silver lining in the worst of
situations. She speaks of the
challenges of being an educator
and why she loves her work
and how it constantly gives
her a lot of happiness.
How did Gyanodaya
begin?
After my husband, Gyan
Bahadur Yakthumba, passed
away, I wanted to make sure
my son attended a good school,
so he could have the best in
life. But Kathmandu in those
days didn’t have many good
schools and I had to send him
Founding another school
Started Gyanodaya Residential School to
accommodate the needs of students from
all across the country.
to Darjeeling. It
made me question
how difficult it
might be for other
single mothers to cope
with their children being
away from them, just because
of the lack of good schools.
This motivated me to start
Gyanodaya Bal Batika and
today we have a residential
school, higher secondary
school and a college.
What kind of inspiration
did your husband play in
founding Gyanodaya?
My husband was a kind
man and had a futuristic
vision. He was also adamant
in completing every single
task that he undertook. His
attitude really inspired me to
take my role seriously and
face every downfall with a
fighting spirit. It was difficult
“It
was difficult
to deal with his
demise, but I
channeled that grief
into something
positive.”
for me to
deal with
his demise,
but I channeled
that
grief into something
positive. You
never know where life takes
you; all you can do is guide
your actions towards the
greater good.
What do you love about
your job?
Everything! Teaching for
me has been an extremely
gratifying profession, and
mostly because I turn into a
kid myself when I am with
my students. The greatest
honour for me is watching my
students become active contributing
members in the
society and knowing that I
have played some part in it is
very satisfying.
What are the biggest challenges
you have faced and
how did you overcome
them?
For a woman trying to work
during that time was very difficult.
I received a lot of negative
criticism, but I never paid
any heed and instead directed
my energy to my work. It’s life,
and the very essence of life
lies in the challenges it throws
at us. It is about moving
through the storms and
emerging a better, stronger
person.
In your time teaching,
how have you seen the
education system grow?
The education system has
changed drastically for the
better in a lot of ways. Rote
learning, having to memorise
everything was what constituted
the teaching pedagogy
then. Today, practical knowledge
is emphasised. The education
system in Nepal has
grown in terms of girl child
inclusion. More and more
girls are becoming a part of
academia and that gives me
great satisfaction.
What would you say your
teaching philosophy is?
Understanding what the
students want is essential and
I believe in student-centric
education. Interests and motivations
vary and for every
teacher to get in touch with
what the students want is very
important. Also, fear cannot
instill positive reinforcement
for kids to concentrate in studies.
It’s important that they
understand we are there for
them no matter what.
How has the earthquake
affected Gyanodaya? And
what are you doing to
help students prepare for
calamities and cope with
the earthquake?
Gyanodaya Bal Batika has
borne the brunt of the earthquake,
we have resumed
classes in tents. Our teachers
and faculty members have
been attending workshops
about earthquake preparations
and we conduct drills to
teach students how to stay
safe.
Any word of encouragement
to youngsters to get
into teaching?
Teaching requires patience,
and most youngsters don’t
think it’s gratifying either. But
this job allows you to make an
impact in someone’s life and
motivate them to do something
worthwhile with their
lives.
