WWF at Work
In Chile’s Coastal Range and Central Valley,
the conversion of native forests to exotic pine
and eucalyptus plantations to feed demand
for pulp and paper has dramatically reduced
native forest cover. To protect the forests—and
the indigenous people and wildlife dependent
on them—WWF is working with private
landowners and the forest industry to create
new private and public protected areas and to
support the sustainable use of native forests.
Meanwhile, salmon farming in Patagonian
lakes has doubled in the past decade,
contaminating freshwater ecosystems and
releasing large numbers of carnivorous, nonnative
species into Chile’s lakes and rivers.
As a result, 90 percent of Chile’s native fish
species are threatened. Following a WWF
study, the world’s largest salmon farming
company agreed to retire its lake concessions
in Chile over the next five years. WWF has met
with banks, government officials, industry
representatives and non-governmental
organizations to establish partnerships for
continued freshwater conservation and
sustainable salmon production.
WWF also promotes the creation of a
marine protected area along Chile’s coast
to safeguard a rich marine environment that
includes the endemic Chilean dolphin and
humpback, sei and blue whales.
