Now that spring is here and
summer is on the way, more and
more people are screaming for ice
cream. We did a survey asking
males and females in our school
what their favorite ice cream
flavor, brand, and place were.
The most popular flavor was
cookie dough. The runner up was
mint chocolate chip, strawberry
and vanilla tied for last. We
assumed that cookie dough would
be the winner. Olivia thought that
strawberry would be more of a
winner just because she finds that
to be her favorite flavor. We were
wrong but not surprised by the
favorite brands.
Ben and Jerry’s was obviously
the favorite brand. Ben & Jerry’s
won 80% of the votes. The
remaining 20% said that their
favorite place to go was Al’s with
Friendly’s not far behind.
In the 1980’s Ben & Jerry’s
was invented by Ben Cohen and
Jerry Greenfield. They started
out by renting a small space in a
bobbin mill on South Champlain
Street in Burlington. They began
packing their ice cream in pints.
Last week I took a survey of fifty
kids in our school to record the
eating habits of SBHS students.
I surveyed twenty five girls and
twenty five boys. This way I could
see whether girls or boys have
healthier eating habits than girls.
The majority of girls and boys
eat three meals a day, a couple
of those meals they eat at home.
A few people said two meals a
day, and nobody said that they
eat one meal a day. Also, the
majority of girls said they never
eat fast food, where as more boys
said that they have it a few days
a week. Only one person from
each gender group said they eat
fast food everyday. So most of
the kids surveyed are pretty good
about how often they eat fattening
fast food. Home cooked meals are
healthier.
So if the kids at are school
aren’t eating fast food for every
meal, how many of them are
following the guidelines of the
traditional food pyramid? Well the
majority of girls said that they get
at least one serving of fruit and
vegetables everyday. For the boys,
about half said they get a serving
of each as well, but half said they
don’t. And surprisingly, only one
person out of both gender groups
– 50 people total – said that they
In 1981 the first Ben and Jerry’s
franchise opened in Shelburne,
Vermont. Ben and Jerry’s ice
cream is bought all over the
world. They are also known for
their socially responsible mission
statement. They aim to do
more than just serve ice cream.
Another corporate favorite was
Friendly’s.
When you go to Friendly’s,
do you go for the food or the ice
cream? We say the ice cream and
their ice cream cakes. Friendly’s
has sold ice cream sundaes
for over 75 years. They make
everything homemade for the
sundaes except the cherries.
Friendly’s was
ranked in the top
100 restaurant
chains in the nation.
Friendly’s was
founded in 1935 by
two Massachusetts
brothers. The first
shop that opened
sold double dipped
cones for only 5
cents. Friendly’s
and Ben & Jerry’s
FOOD THAT HITS THE SPOT!
by Emma Skorstad
were a vegetarian. Both groups
mostly said they get at least one
serving of dairy as well.
I also asked everyone if their
family shopped at a normal
grocery store or a health food
store. The majority said a normal
grocery store. Most of the kids
said that they only eat candy a
few times a week. Then I asked
everyone if they knew how to cook
their own meal and how often they
made food for themselves. All but
one person said that they in fact
can cook,, and most everyone said
they make their own meal a couple
times a week.
When kids don’t make their
own food, where do they go to eat
and how much do they spend?
Most boys said they spend $25
or more a week on food, and the
girls had ranged between $5-15
and $15-25 a week. The majority
of the boys said that their favorite
differ from local favorite, Al’s
French Fries because good ‘ole is
locally owned.
Where do you go when you
want the best french fries in
town? Al’s French Fries! Now that
their ice cream stand is open, it
makes you think of summer. In
the last 1940’s Al and Genevieve
Rusterholz started this restaurant.
The first building was opened in
South Burlington which is where
the former Al’s is now. Not much
about Al’s is online; to experience
Al’s you have to go there yourself.
Where ever you decide to
purchase your ice cream, have fun
and enjoy your summer.
place to go out to eat was a tie
between Wings Over Burlington
and Moe’s. Second place was
Olive Garden, Marco’s and Burger
King. A few people said local
places in South Burlington as
well. For the girls, it was a tie
between Quizno’s Sub and Al’s
French Fries. The girls had even
less fast food places written down
then the boys.
So basically, what I found out
is this: boys and girls pretty
much have the same eating
habits. Almost everyone goes out
to eat a couple days a week, and
the places they go to are usually
not even fast food places. Some
choose healthier foods but overall
the choices are similar between
genders. One difference is that
the majority of girls said they
prefer water over juice and soda,
and boys said they prefer juice.
