Definition: Delamination • Local separation of fiber layers in the laminate. • Can be also associated with debonding at fiber-matrix interface. • Leads to Stiffness reduction. • May grow and accumulate under fatigue loads, until a structural failure occurs. Fiber layer Delamination Delamination may initiate from: • Manufacturing process, e.g. inappropriate lay-up, curing process (voids), etc. • Assembly, e.g. over-tightening of bolts, etc. • in-Service exposure, e.g. impact damages, etc.
