The New Zealand V8 Touring Car Championship:
The New Zealand V8s (NZV8’s) is a New Zealand-based motorsport category of touring car racing that has
been running since 1996.
The NZV8 Championship is New Zealand’s premier touring car category and the anchor for the Premier Race
Championship Series held across New Zealand.
The NZV8 category journeys to various race tracks around New Zealand which includes Teretonga
(Invercargill), Levels Raceway (Timaru), Manfield (Fielding), Taupo Motorsport Park (Taupo), Hampton Downs
(Auckland) and Pukekohe (Auckland).
This series somewhat resembles but differs in many ways from the Australian V8 Supercars, primarily in
terms of the level of technology. The NZV8 series focuses on cost containment and control to make sure that
the series is not dominated by one make or team. It is technically more basic than the V8 Supercars, but also
tends to be more spectacular with a lot more close-action racing due to limited grip and braking capabilities.
The vehicles themselves are visually almost indistinguishable from the old generation V8 Supercar, and grids
are typically 25 to 30+ vehicles in size.
A number of Australian V8 Supercar drivers have and do race in the NZV8 series such as Jason Bargwana, Luke
Youlden and David Besnard for example, as the series has come to be recognised as an outstanding class
within Australasia. V8 Supercar teams have previously been involved; Team Kiwi Racing has run a two-car
team in the series in the past as a development ground, while Tasman Motorsport has been running a single
car team with Andy Booth driving (Holden Commodore) since the 2006/07 season.
