Horace and Cindy Nowlin are typical parents of typical teenagers, doing all the things it takes to raise good children and make ends meet - except on race weekends when they become teammates with their sons Tyler, 19 and Cody, 17. Horace keeps the bikes running, Cindy keeps the operation running, Tyler and Cody twist throttles. This family found a lifetime of shared experiences and commonalities in motocross. As Cindy says, “Where else would your kids be with you on a Saturday night?!” Horace has been into motorcycles about as long as he’s been into walking. He raced in Middle Tennessee in the 1970s at a track (The Widowmaker) owned by the father-in-law of the current track owner of Fast Farms MX Park and Christiana MX Park. Horace enjoyed racing but spent most of his days on hill climbs and trails in Coalmont, Tennessee. Cindy was more interested in traditional sports and loved baseball in particular. She had no idea how life was about to change. The Nowlins spent a few years doing normal family things, and in the world of athletics the kids played team sports. Tyler got the bug first and decided he was going to get a dirt bike. He started mowing lawns and saving, even going to Disney World and restraining from spending a dollar of his savings. At age 12 he bought his first dirt bike, a 1984 Honda CRF85. Cody was right behind him. During the 2004-2005 season the Nowlins went to their first race. The race was at a TNT track in Monteagle, Tennessee. It would set the tone for the story of this motocross family. Tyler raced on his ’84 Honda CRF85 and Cody on a Honda CRF70. This was the first AMA race for the Nowlins, and the costs involved were surprising. A staff member at the race pointed out to Tyler that “in the smaller classes, it’s more about the machine than it is about the rider.” The man was referring to Tyler’s ’84 Honda, comparing it to another rider’s pretty new bike. Tyler isn’t one to let things get under his skin though; he was simply thrilled to be at a race. He took to the track and brought back a 7th place. The kid with the shiny new bike placed 13th. You see, the Nowlins aren’t flashy they’re just fast. The Nowlins were coming together. Baseball and the other sports were fading into the background and motocross was taking over. They rented out tracks with friends for the kids to practice on, and Tyler and Cody both improved. Cody was riding a trail bike at the time, and the Nowlins decided to replace it with a 65cc motocross bike. In his next race Cody placed 3rd, and the Nowlins were completely hooked. For the parents it was simple. Cindy says, “when they try their best and you can see it in their faces, it’s all worth it.” Cody often remarks that he likes knowing that how he rides in a race is on him 100%. Good or bad, Cody gets out exactly what he puts in. He is no more competitive than Tyler who rides because he just can’t help it. Tyler rides, “because it’s fun, mostly.” Tyler often floats ahead of the other riders, saying hi to the flaggers and photographers as he goes by. He looks into the crowd and notices everything. Then he gets back to racing. It didn’t take long for Tyler to learn about Loretta Lynn’s and decide he wanted to race there before he graduated from high school. The Nowlins got more serious about motocross racing and started traveling to qualifiers and races all over the country. The summer before his senior year, Tyler qualified and raced in the C class on a 2006 Yamaha YZ250. He placed 5th overall in his class and earned one Holeshot award which gave him a trip to the podium and a $100 gift card. Not bad for a soft-spoken kid from Hillsboro. Cody was on his way to qualifying for Loretta’s this year, wanting to race on his brother’s YZ250, but the YZ lost 2nd gear in Cody’s second qualifying moto, and they couldn’t find a replacement anywhere nearby. Cody was riding great too. That’s how it goes for a lot of riders every year. Cody says, “there’s always next year and that’s just more time to practice.” Families that play together do indeed stay together. Finding that common thread can be tricky, but it’s not impossible. Cindy Nowlin will tell you, “It has helped my family become happier and better connected with each other. Nowadays family dinners can occur even on a Saturday night at home, because that’s just what we do now.” Andy Harper 13
