PENTECOST
This Pentecost icon is full of the strong colors of
light and power, symbolic of the purging reviving
fire. The movement of color is in the form of an
apse, with the newly-born Church embraced within
the dome of Heaven. In the center of the icon is St.
Mary, surrounded by the Apostles who, filled and
empowered by the Holy Spirit, would take the
Gospel to the four corners of the earth … including
St. Thomas who brought the Word to India! In the
foreground of this icon, the kneeling women
symbolize those who would be the martyrs of the
Church. At the top of the icon a blue semi-circle,
representing the divine realm and God the Father,
and the form of a dove the Holy Spirit. The red,
yellow and blue of this icon symbolize the fire of
Pentecost and the birth of the Church. This icon
reminds us of the spiritual gifts of the Church and
that we, as true children of God and His Church,
should be zealous disciples in our world today
