ATA NATIONAL NEWS 95TH ATA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS AMERICAN TENNIS ASSOCIATION NEWS FORT LAUDERDALE TO HOST 95TH ATA NATIONAL CHAMPION- SHIPS JULY 30TH-AUGUST 4TH, 2012 The ATA Board and the Greater Fort Lauderdale Local Committee have been working diligently to prepare for the 95th ATA National Championships. We have received a warm welcome from Greater Fort Lauderdale and we are sure that you all will enjoy the tennis facilities, hotels and activities that we have planned for the week. The adults will play at The Tennis Club of Fort Lauderdale which is one of the finest private tennis sites featuring 20 clay courts, heated swimming pool and Jacuzzi overlooking court one. All ATA players will have access to the onsite ATA Lounge overlooking the courts, weight room, locker room, showers and sauna. There is also a fully equipped restaurant onsite. Youth participants will be playing at the Jimmy Evert Tennis Center at Holiday Park. The Jimmy Evert Tennis Center is known throughout the world as one of the nation’s finest public tennis facilities. Its rich and distinguished history includes everything from teaching young children to play, to contributing to the development of tennis professionals Chris Evert and Jennifer Capriati. The Jimmy Evert Tennis Center features 18 lighted clay courts and three hard courts. The majority of the junior age categories will be played on clay. There will be practice time allotted the Sunday before tournament play begins for juniors and adults. Both facilities are located less than 4 miles from the host hotels. The host hotels are located on Fort Lauderdale’s 17th Street corridor which features a variety of restaurants and shopping for all. The Adult and Junior host hotels are only 2 miles from the Fort Lauderdale International Airport. The Hilton Fort Lauderdale Marina has been selected as the host hotel for the Adults. The ATA has a special rate of $99.00 per night plus tax. This rate includes free wi-fi in all rooms. For those who will have a car, self parking is $10.00 per day. AUSTRALIAN OPEN BY BENJAMIN WOODS GRAND SLAM... AUSTRALIAN OPEN Starting the year off in high gear, 15-year-old tennis sensation, Taylor Townsend (USA), won both singles and doubles (with Gabrielle Andrews) junior titles at the Australian Open in Melbourne, Australia during the two-week event, January 16-29, 2012. Entering the event as the number 14 seed, and as an unknown except for her performances at the 2011 US Open, where she reached the third round in Girls’ Singles and won one round in the Women’s qualifying round, Townsend only wanted to play within her expectations and be aggressive against her opponents who were mostly baseliners. She exceeded her expectations and even more as she played aggressively through the first three rounds without dropping a set. The challenge for her came during the quarterfinal match against Sabina Sharipova (12), when she won the first set at 6-3, lost the second at 2-6 on errors, but picked up her game to win the third set and match, 6-4. In the semifinals against Krista Hardebeck (USA), an unseeded entry who upset the number one seed - Irana Khromacheva of Russia in the previous round - Townsend won the first set in a hard-fought battle that ended in a tie-breaker, winning it, 7-6(3). She won the second set at 6-4, putting her into the finals to play for her first Grand Slam junior singles title. In the finals, Townsend met Yulia Putintseva, the fourth seed from Russia who had defeated her in the semifinals of a previous event at Eddie Herr. Townsend won the first set easily at 6-1. In the second set things turned in Putintseva’s favor. She picked up her game and forced the match to go three sets. Going into the third set, Townsend spent time going through her notes on the changeover, and redirected her focus on the match. Her opponent became very emotional after Townsend was awarded a point to take the advantage during the third game of the set. A lot of emotion began to build up on the court which Townsend recalled as a determining factor in her previous loss to Putintseva. During her post-match interview, Townsend mentioned that she learned from that experience and used it to her advantage during the match. “But, yeah, I just kinda tried to focus on myself and just make sure -- I was like, Okay, just keep playing one point at a time. That’s what I kept telling myself: one point at a time, one point at a time.” At the end of the final point of the match, Townsend fell to the court in awe of her victory, letting all of her emotions come out, rose to the crowd with tears streaming down her cheeks, and her face aglow with disbelief and excitement. “Tears of joy. I mean, it’s really exciting. I mean, it’s a dream come true for me, you know. A lot of people were supporting me, and my family and everyone are just so proud. It was just a proud moment for me and kind of just rushed -- the feelings kind of rushed in,” as Townsend defended her emotional display after the match.
