Wiliams Sisters A courageous human rights actiist and an advocate for African Americans. Malcom has been called one of the most influential Africian Americans of all times. As an American screenwriter, director, and film producer, Denzel Washington recieved two Academy Awards, two Golden Globe Awards, and a Tony award. Served as President of South Africa from 1994-1999. He was the first President to be fully electd in a fully democratic election. Born to Jamaican immigrants, Colin was am American statesman and a retired four-star general in the United States army. He was the 65th United States Secretary of State being the first African American to serve the position. Denzel Washington Morgan Freeman Often reffered to as the King of Pop, Michael Jackon served as an American recording artist, “MJ” serves as the worlds most successful entertainer. Jackson popularized many dance moves including the robot and the moonwalk. He won many awards which made the most awarded recording artist in history. Tyler Perry Wilard Christopher “Will” Smith Jr., is an Actor and producer, and rapper. Hes been called one of the most powerful actor in Hollywood. Smith has been nominated for four Golden Globe Awards, two Academy Awards, and has won multiple Grammy Awards. Born in Memphos Tennesse, Freeman has grown into one of the most respected figures in modern US cinema. He is an American actor, aviator, film director, and narrator. Micheal Jackson Perry is an American actor, director, playwrite, entreprenuer, screemwriter, producer, and author. He wrote and produced many stage plays during the 1990s adn 200s. Forbes named him the highest paid man in entertainment. Will Smith Jack Johnson Jesse Owens was an African American track-and-field star famous for his performance at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin. Owens claimed 4 gold medals and set records that lasted for more than 20 years. Muhammad Ali Gwendelon was the first African American to win a Pultizer Prize. Her poetry themes were usually the ordinary lives of urban African Americans dealing with racism and poverty. Johnson was an American boxer and arguably the best heavyweight of his generation. He was the first black Heavyweight Champion of the World (1908-1915), Jesse Owens Muhammad Ali has no doubt been a fixture in world culture since the 1960’s. He took the gold medal at the Olympics in 1960. He battled George Foreman in Zaire, and went head to head with Joe Frazier in in the Philippines. Freshmen head to state DECA competition Hannah Brown & Meaghan McNamara Staff Writers Freshman Taylor Witt’s heart is racing. She musters up all the courage she can and steps in the room with fellow freshman and teammate Simone Macklin. Now she must use her math and logic skills to make a foolproof budget and face an intimidating judge. She takes a deep breath and begins crunching the numbers, simultaneously nervous and determined. State DECA competition awaits freshmen Taylor Witt, Simone Macklin, and Giselle Moreno in Corpus Christi, March 1-3. Witt and Macklin made first place in Financial Services and Moreno made second in Travel and Tourism at regional competition January 25 at Texarkana College. “I think our whole team will do really well,” Macklin said. “I think by the time we leave, we’ll be ready. I’m really lucky to be able to have an experience like this with such great people.” In Financial Services, competitors had 30 minutes to plan a monthly budget and 15 minutes to present it to a judge. “I was nervous because it was my first time and I didn’t know what to expect,” Witt said. “I didn’t have a lot of time to prepare; I was surprised to win.” In Travel and Tourism, competitors were given a prompt on which they had to give a presentation with a partner with 30 minutes to prepare. They then met with the judge and told them about their prompt and their response. “I was nervous before I met my judge, but then everything just fell right into place,” Moreno said. “I was well prepared; I studied what I was given the week before. I had a blast and it was a learning experience.” The three girls prepared by studying information packets, attending meetings, and talking to the previous competitors and their coach, Rose Bayless. “Mrs. Bayless really helped us a lot by telling us what to look at,” Macklin said. “The kids who had competed before gave really useful advice.” DECA, Distributive Education Clubs of America, is an organization that helps to prepares young emerging leaders in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools around the world for a very prosperous future. “I feel it will help me later on in life, whether I want to open up my own business or apply for a job somewhere,” Witt said. “It will always benefit me and help me with whatever I choose to do.” Kerry Wilson / THE LONG-VIEW Educating students before drilling athletes teacher and coach Mark Peters aides a student with his work, bringing back memories of him being a student at Longview High School. Peters has taught here for five years. Returning home Teacher and coach comes back to educate at his alma mater Halie Waid Staff Writer Student to teacher. Player to coach. He never thought he would end up back at his hometown, with his old football team. He had gone through the long journey through High School. He never thought he would be back at the same school he studied at, with the same team he played on throughout his high school years. Coach Peters, after being a student and a football player for Longview High School, is now a football coach and teacher at the same school. “It sort of surprised me that I came back here,” Peters said. “I didn’t expect to come to the same school I studied and played at.” Peters attended Louisiana Northwestern State College, the same college the other football coach, Coach King, attended. He played football in college as well as high school. “I was lucky enough to go to the same college my senior football coach went to,” Peters said. “I didn’t think I would come back and get to coach with him.” “I love being able to give back to the High School who made me who I am today” — COACH PETERS teacher and coach Peter’s main reason for coming back was for something other than football and teaching. “My real reason for coming back was my family,” Peters said. “Being able to spend time with them is probably the biggest plus.” Peters found it a great honor to be able to come back to his hometown. It was where he had spent his whole childhood, and where he developed his life, and football skills he uses today as a teacher, father, and a coach. “I love being able to give back to the High School who made me who I am today,” Peters said. “This community was very influential in my life, and has definitely helped me along the road through my career.” Peters is glad he can coach the team that he once played on. It inspires him to continue what he started as a High School athlete. “I’m so honored that I get to help carry on the Longview tradition in the future athletes and students,” Peters said. “I love having the opportunity to coach the first caliber football team I once played on.” Peters hopes to continue coaching with the steadily excelling Longview High School football team, and make it farther than they have gone as a team. He also hopes to excel as a team, and to teach each individual player to prepare them for the future they will have. He will one day coach his own son on the same team. The last place in the world he expected to be is back at Longview High School. Peters has come a long way as a player, a coach, a student, and a teacher. As if stabbing wasn’t enough, to make it over the top he attempts to rip out her heart? A bit extreme isn’t it? Father shoots daughter’s laptop A father puts bullets through his daughter’s laptop because of a facebook post she made. Forget deleting Facebook - or even taking her laptop away, shooting the thing is much more appropriate. He surely must be from Texas.
