MEET A COUPLE Alison & Ian Rogers ALISON & IAN How did you two meet each other? ALISON: It’s a bit of a crazy story! We met 22 years ago when we were 9 years old. My mum had decided to change mine and my sisters’ primary school. I remember turning up at the school gates, I was so nervous, all these new faces just staring at me, but I must say I looked over and thought what’s the milky bar kid doing here? And I wonder if he has free chocolate, not knowing that I was looking at my future husband……it’s unreal. IAN: Yes, it’s crazy I did look like the milky bar kid! ha ha! I remember the first time I saw Ali we were told by our teacher to make her feel welcome and include her - to be honest once I saw her, I was more than happy to. I have to say for me there was an instant attraction. ALISON: I’ve not heard that before…..aww, very sweet! So I joined that class, and Ian and I became classmates until we both left school and went our separate ways. Tell us about the engagement. IAN: I’d been thinking about it for weeks, but just couldn’t find the right time or place - so I decided to conspire with Ali’s mum and dad. Knowing Ali like I do, I knew she’d be happy as long as it was simple and honest. So the day I decided to ask her, I told my parents what I was about to do and left the house all suited and booted, with the ring, champagne and flowers ready. As I get to Ali’s parents and ring the doorbell, it seemed like forever before she came out looking at me all confused. So I then grab my moment, get down on one knee right there and say “what are you doing for the rest of your life? Because I want to spend mine with you. Will you marry me?” ALISON: I was so shocked. IAN: So I’m waiting, thinking please say yes, please say yes - then finally she says yes amongst the crying and laughter. It was lovely. ALISON: It was perfect. My mum came rushing out, we were both laughing and crying all at the same time in the street. My dad was smiling from ear to ear and hugging Ian. With all the commotion we were making all the neighbours start appearing, clapping and cheering! It was a real celebration. We ended up going from house to house down our street. I mean most of the neighbours have known me my whole life. We were soooooo tipsy by the end of the day we crashed and opened the bottle of champagne Ian brought with him the next day.
