COLIN DEMPSTER ERNST & YOUNG Cohn Dempster is a partner within the restructuring division at Ernst S. Young. Dempster — who spent four years working as a partner in London before heading back to Scotland in 2001 - is arguably best known for the case involving Scotland’s oldest carpet maker Stoddard International, as well as Stadia Group and Vida Sports. Dempster previously spent 15 years at Arthur Andersen and developed experience from advising stakeholders in distressed companies through to formal insolvency. He also has a strong understanding of restructuring assignments in the oil service sector - mainly based in Aberdeen. JOANNA ELSON MONEY ADVICETRIJSI Jo nna Elson is the chief execu I e of independent charity the Money Advice Trust. The former primary school cher assumed her role at the organisation in 2006 after leaving her previous role as executive director of the British Bankers Association. The charity - which was formed in 1991 helps people across the UK tackle their debts and manage their money more effectively. In doing so it works with the government, the private sector and a.rangeof money advice agencies. Elson - who is tasked with the overall running of the trust - has also been a trustee of the Personal Finance Education Group charity and acted as a volunteer for a number of other charities. CARL FAULDS PORTLAND BUSINESS & FINANCIAL Never out of the limelight, Carl Faulds is a former president of the IPA and the managing • director ot Portland Business and Financial Solutions. Faulds has continued to build the profile of the industry after stepp ng down as IPA president and the industry has collectively recognised his contribution in taking senior government figures to task over the future of regulation in the market. Since 2010, he has represented local trade creditors in the two administrations of Portsmouth FC and has been the administrator and supervisor of Salisbury FC. Over the years, Faulds — who has been the managing director at Portland since 1990- has also rescued AC Cars though a CVA, as well as the Morning Starnewspaper without suffering a break in daily national publication. GLEN F[.A iNERY NABARRO Glen Flannery is a partner at Nabarro. He regularly advises debtors, creditors, IPs and other stakeholders about receivership, administration, CVAs and liquidation issues. And Flannery also has particular expertise when it comes to international and cross-border insolvencies. Notably, Flannery recently assisted the US Securities and Exchange Commission with the cross-border insolvency aspects of the global fraud investigation into Stanford International Bank. In the 2010 and 2011 editions of Chambers & Partners he was ranked as a leading individual and described as “knowledgeable and astute”, as well as “proactive and innovative”. RICHARD FLEMING KPMG Richard Fleming is the UK head of Transactions and Restructuring at KPMG, leading more than 1,500 employees. He was one of three KPMG figures to become ‘the special ones’ earlier this year when he took on the ‘special’ administration of MF Global UK under the neverbefore-used rules that came into force after the collapse of Lehman Brothers. He boasts 25 years’ experience leading turnaround, work-out assignments and various forms of insolvency solutions for under-performing companies. Fleming studied at the University of Tasmania and was responsible for the restructuring of JJB Sports and Black Leisure. He is recognised for taking both companies through CVAs without any share suspension. Fleming’s sector expertise includes manufacturing, leisure, transport, retail, gas and automotive. He has widespread experience selling businesses both in the UK and overseas. SANDRA FRISBY NOHINOHAM UNIVERSITY Sandra Frisby is the associate professor in company and commercial law at the University of Nottingham. Frisby — who assumed her role of lecturer in 1999— is particularly interested in corporate insolvency law, company law and property law. Her current research activities include investigating the legal responses to the corporate rescue ideology and the impact of insolvency on corporate employees. Recently, Frisby undertook research into the hotly-debated topic of pre-pack administrations. Despite criticism from some quarters, Frisby found that in over 9O°/c of pre-packs the jobs in the business are saved, compared to about 600/c in other insolvency business sales. MARK FRY BEGBIES THAYNOR Mark Fry is an IP and the regional managing partner at Begbies Traynor, responsible for London and the South East. He has garnered more than 20 years’ experience in the industry and, during his time at Begbies, has developed a separate but integrated restructuring and banking practice. This deals with both debtor and creditor-led turnarounds. Fry - who also holds the directorships of several other companies - was originally a founding partner in Taylor Gotham 8, Fry, which he later sold in 2005 to Begbies. He is a counsel member of the IPA and has served as a member of the General Technical R3. FRASER GRAY ZOLFO COOPER Fraser Gray is a partner in the financial advisory and restructuring services team at Zolfos. Chartered accountant and licensed P Gray recently worked as administrator to MEl and the Brownhi[ls Group — the UK’s largest distributor of motor homes. At MFI -while maintaining head office operations to ensure the sale of the remaining business - he took control of a stock disposal programme. He also oversaw the restructuring of Brownhills and was heavily involved with its sale - a move which safeguarded 300 jobs as well as its core supplier contracts. Gray — who splits his time between the Glasgow and London offices - is a regular speaker about the care sector, licensed trade and retail. BRYAN GREEN TMA Bryan Green has been the president of the Turnaround Management Association UK (TMA) since January 2010 and is also the founder and CEO of Tnui — a stressed/distressed investment and consultancy business. During his tenure as TMA president, its UK group membership has increased by more than 30%. previously, Green was the head of the restructuring and insolvency group at international law firm Salans, where he advised on restructuring cases in both the UK and Europe. He was the principal legal adviser in the restructuring of Little Chef, MEl and Allied Carpets, before leaving to become CEO for the European Operations at Gordon Brothers Europe. TONY GROOM K?
