Join us again for lots of fun and a collector Tshirt. Start at 7 am, the Port Mansfield CC Pavilion where breakfast will be served. A free boxlunch will also be provided. Afterwards, enjoy drinks and chili at PELICAN’S PUB. We could usesome boat captains willing to provide ferry service. TheRedfish Shoot Out would not be the samewithout their support and expertise in shootingevents.CCA Texas and Academy Sports and Outdoorssponsored an amazing raffle after theshoot. Goode BBQ catered one of the bestburger lunches you could have asked for. Wehad multiple winners ofgreat prizes includingCCA Texas fishingrods, hunting packagesand some great artpieces donated by SamCaldwell and LesMcDonald.CCA Texas wouldlike to thank everyonethat helped make this agreat event. CCA Texas partnerswith Harte ResearchInstitute toexpand Lap Reefrestoration projectCCA Texas recently partneredwith the Harte Research Institute(HRI) to expand an existing3.8 acre restoration site in Copano Bay.This approximately 1.5 acre additionto the project is located in CopanoBay on the Lap Reef complex. HRI’sprevious work on this restorationproject was through a partnershipwith the National Oceanic and AtmosphericAdministration (NOAA). Withthe completion of this additional workfunded by CCA Texas’ Habitat Todayfor Fish Tomorrow (HTFT) program,the total restoration effort will sit at 5.3acres. This $75,000 commitment byHTFT is made possible by CCANational’s Building ConservationFund.The highlight of this restorationeffort is the construction methodused. A 3-dimensional reef complexwith high vertical relief to enhanceoyster and finfish abundance will beused, and will minimize sedimentationby design. These complex reefstructures provide habitat for manyfish and invertebrate species and inthis project, the 3-dimensional reefwill be constructed as a series of reefmounds.This method of construction wasused on the original 3.8 acre restorationeffort and increased fish and invertebrateabundances have been observedthrough follow-up monitoring.The project location was identified aspart of a larger mapping effort (Pollacket al., 2012) to identify and prioritizeThis $75,000 commitmentby HTFT is made possible byCCA National’s BuildingConservation Fund.locations for oyster reef restorationbased on long-term water quality andoyster health.In addition, pre-constructionmonitoring has been conducted toverify the location has suitable bottomconditions to support the weight ofnew oyster reef and it is adjacent to existinglive reef.The actual construction of the reefwill be through the use of recycled,clean crushed concrete or other suitablebase materials such as limestone,river rock or porcelain. After the basehas been created, reclaimed oystershells will used for the top layer. Thesereclaimed shells will come from astockpile that is part of the OysterShell Recycling program created byPollack/TAMUCC/HRI. These reclaimedshells are secured from area restaurantsand processing houses.With funds in place and amendmentsfor expansion to the originalpermits in process, CCA Texaslooks forward to seeing the completionof this project in the very near future.CCA Texas, HTFT and CCA National’sBuilding Conservation Program fullyunderstand the importance of the restorationof oyster reef systemsthroughout Texas’ coastal waters andthey are committed to this effort andothers along the coast. —John Blaha~9~
