PROCLAIMED, that State Comptroller ThomasP. DiNapoli does hereby recognize and applaud theoutstanding accomplishments of Galileo Galilei andGiuseppe Petrosino; and be it furtherPROCLAIMED, that during this month of October,two thousand nine, Comptroller DiNapoli doesjoin with the people of New York in honoring theremarkable achievements of generations of Italiansand Italian Americans, and celebrating the rich legacybequeathed to us by them.Thomas P. WHEREAS: In observing October as NationalItalian-American Heritage <strong>Month</strong>, the Council of theCity of New York unites in goodwill to foster a greaterappreciation of the extraordinary roles Italian andItalian-Americans have played in shaping New YorkCity and the world. Today, millions of Italians andAmericans of Italian ancestry continue to enrich ourcommunity and we are proud to join all Americansin celebrating their distinguished contributions;andWHEREAS: Galileo Galilei was one suchindividual. Galileo Galilei was born in Pisa onFebruary 15, 1564, son of Vincenzo Galilei, a musicscholar, and Giulia Ammannati. He studied at theUniversity of Pisa, where he held the mathematicschair from 1589-1592. He was then appointed to thechair of mathematics in the University of Padua,where he remained until 1610; andWHEREAS: Galileo is credited with no less thanestablishing the modern method of experimentation.He was the first scientist and thinker to try to proveor disprove theory by conducting tests and observingthe results. Prior to Galileo, scientific theory waspurely based on hypothesis and conjecture. It wasin the interest of conducting accurate tests and inmaking precise observations that Galileo developed21
