Chapter 1INTRODUCTION<strong>The</strong> ultimate goal <strong>of</strong> this thesis is to inspire an interest in rhythmic analysis <strong>and</strong> anunderst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>of</strong> its tools <strong>and</strong> applications, particularly to the repertoire <strong>of</strong> the wind b<strong>and</strong>.<strong>The</strong> content is divided into two sections. Part I deals with a general overview <strong>of</strong> thesubject matter. It includes a review <strong>of</strong>literature on the subject <strong>of</strong> rhythm, an outlining <strong>of</strong>terms <strong>and</strong> systems that attempt to reconcile the broad approaches taken in the literature,<strong>and</strong> a general look at the tools <strong>and</strong> applications <strong>of</strong> rhythmic analysis. Part II dealsdirectly with applications <strong>of</strong> rhythmic analysis.It consists <strong>of</strong>ten free-st<strong>and</strong>ing rhythmicanalyses, representing compositions <strong>for</strong> winds <strong>and</strong> percussion from a wide range <strong>of</strong>compositional periods <strong>and</strong> styles.<strong>The</strong> different approaches needed <strong>for</strong> each piece areintended to demonstrate both the utility <strong>and</strong> diversity <strong>of</strong> rhythmic analysis, withconnections to personal underst<strong>and</strong>ing, education, <strong>and</strong> per<strong>for</strong>mance.
