Callinectes similis Williams, 1966Lesser Blue CrabInfraorder BrachyuraFamily PortunidaeReferences used: Williams (1966, 1974, 1984), Powers (1977)Diagnostic characters: Carapace with six frontal teeth including inner orbitals, submedian pair small,but distinct. Closely resembles and often confused with C. danae and C. ornatus. Morphology ofmale 1st pleopod easiest separation character. Some geographic separation among the three species- C. similis has more Carolinian distribution.Habitat: Open Gulf and high-salinity areas of lower bays. Near-shore to about 40 fathoms. Commonover sand and mud bottoms. Co-occurs with C. sapidus. Extremely abundant northern Gulf ofMexico.Range: Atlantic coast of U. S., northwestern Florida through Gulf of Mexico to Yucatan, Jamaica,Colombia.
