MinistriesAdministrationThe administrative officers of theChurch are the president, the executivesecretary and the treasurer. They areaccountable to the members of theChurch through the executive committee,which has ultimate responsibilityfor overseeing the management ofthe Church. The president providesstrategic and spiritual leadership andsupervises the general work of the Church within histerritory with the aim of enabling it to fulfil its mission.An additional duty is that of ensuring that thefield for which he is responsible conducts its affairsin harmony with the policies of the wider Church.The executive secretary handles the legal, statisticaland constitutional issues of the Union and isprimarily responsible for human resources. Theexecutive secretary also serves as the office managerand deputises for the president in his absence.The treasurer is the chief steward of the Churchand is responsible for ensuring that the money givento the Church by members is used in accordance withits mission. He also ensures that financial practicesare in harmony with statutory requirements anddenominational policies.The <strong>Adventist</strong>Discovery CentreThe <strong>Adventist</strong> DiscoveryCentre (ADC) provides adistance learning andonline study programme.Over many years, theADC (formerly the VOP)has been a valuable outreachorganisation of theChurch and continues tobe very effective.Children’s MinistriesThe primary concern of the Children’s Ministriesdepartment is to provide opportunities for childrenfrom birth to the age of 14 to grow in faith. Thisdepartment looks at the whole child and seeks toprovide many approaches and openings that willlead children to Jesus and encourage them in theirdaily walk with him.ADRAThe <strong>Adventist</strong> Development and ReliefAgency (ADRA) is a humanitarianorganisation. In the British Union wehave ADRA-UK and ADRA-Ireland.Through its financial, material andtechnical resources ADRA supports,rehabilitates and enhances the quality oflife and well-being of communities andcitizens in developing countries. Primarily,ADRA works to create lasting solutions,empowering people to make the best useof resources to reach their potential.CommunicationThe primary role of the Communicationdepartment is to help the Church to communicatethe Gospel effectively. Secondly, its taskis to promote a favourable image of theChurch – its mission, life, witness and relatedactivities – by using the most effective andappropriate means of communication. Thedepartment hosts the church’s web page onwww.adventist.org.uk.<strong>Adventist</strong> Chaplaincy<strong>Adventist</strong> Chaplaincy Ministries (ACM) serves asthe official link to organisations using chaplains insecular or church-related institutions. ACM in theUnited Kingdom concentrates its work in the areasof prisons and the field of higher education.1011Community MinistriesThe Community Ministries department aims to helpmembers put Christian love into action in their localcommunities. The department follows the exampleof Jesus’ ministry by recognising the importance ofmeeting people’s practical and material needs beforeaddressing their spiritual needs. Many local churchesare actively involved in community projects. Eachchurch may have its own unique ministry tailored tothe needs of its own neighbourhood.
EducationThe Education department provides supervision,direction and support to <strong>Adventist</strong> schools and collegesin the territory. In the British Union there arenine schools: one in Galway in the Irish Mission,two in the North England Conference in Granthamand Birmingham, and six in the South EnglandConference, one each in Plymouth and Bracknell,two in Watford and two in London. In addition, thedepartment promotes the values of Seventh-day<strong>Adventist</strong> education and supports the nine schoolsin keeping abreast with current trends and raisingstandards.Home schooling offers an alternative option in thebroader educational work of the Church in Britain tobenefit many who would otherwise go without aChristian education. It offers families a way ofmaking Christian education a reality for their childrenin an accessible and effective manner.Newbold College is a College of Higher Educationoperated by the Seventh-day <strong>Adventist</strong> Church withcapacity for about three hundred students. Thecampus is located on beautiful parkland in Binfield,about thirty miles west of London.Newbold offers a range of courses from certificatesthrough to doctoral programmes and welcomesstudents from all backgrounds. Most of the pastorsserving in the British Union are graduates fromNewbold College. The college is a partner institutionof the University of Wales, Lampeter. In some disciplines,it serves as an extension campus of AndrewsUniversity in the United States. These people are sometimesreferred to as ‘the unchurched’, culturally secular or philosophically postmodern.Such individuals are open to a variety of ideas, but are more likelyto be influenced by experience than doctrinal certainties.As part of our effort to reach this wider community, we have developedan approach called ‘LIFEdevelopment’, in harmony with the purpose of<strong>Adventist</strong> education that ‘restoring the image of God in man is the goalof redemption, the great goal of life’. ‘LIFEdevelopment’ is a concept ofconnecting members of our Church with people in our communities. Thisapproach seeks first to engage people in life-changing experiences, activitiesand friendships that then create a hunger for understanding biblical truth.Family MinistriesThe Family Ministries department, as the name suggests, seeksto promote healthy relationships within the family. The basicareas of emphasis are premarital guidance, strengtheningmarriage, and parent education, withattention also given to extended families,single parenting, blended family needs,and the needs of singles. The SouthEngland Conference and NorthEngland Conference Family Lifedepartments operate a counsellingservice for members and nonmembers.Please see the telephonedirectory for their respective telephonenumbers.EvangelismAlerting a fallen world to the returnof Jesus Christ and the establishmentof God’s Kingdom is foundationalto the Seventh-day <strong>Adventist</strong>Church, and each member plays apart.For the few in our islands whoare familiar with Jesus Christ andbiblical teaching, it may well beappropriate to enhance theirunderstanding with themes fromDaniel and Revelation, with specificreference to end-time events.12These have become the traditionalmethods of <strong>Adventist</strong> outreach.Sadly, most people in our societyhave little knowledge of biblicalteaching, no personal experience ofJesus Christ, and so no hope fortheir eternal future. Many are13Health MinistriesThe Health Ministries department providesinformation and resources on health-relatedmatters and promotes a healthful lifestyle amongchurch members. Through an ongoing programme,it also has an outreach ministry to non-members,in which they are encouraged to lead healthy andfulfilling lives while being conscious of God’sinterest in the way they live.
