The halogen familyBy: Jake F. Ziegler & Olivia M.Reindl

The Elements…..Fluorine9p 9e 19nChlorine17p 17e 18nBromine35p 35e 45nIodine53p 53e 74nAstatine85p 85e 125n

What do the atoms of the Halogenfamily have in Common? All members of the Halogen family have 7electrons in their outer shells, giving theman oxidation (the process or result ofoxidizing) number of -11 **http://www.chemicalelements.com/groups/halogens.html

Are these elements reactive?Yes they are, see take Fluorine for example, ithas 2 electrons on the 1 st ring and 7 on the 2 ndring. It will find a atom that has 1 atom on the 2 nd( ex: lithium) ring and that atom will give it tofluorine.

So, are the Solids Liquids orGases? They are a mix of these forms:Solids= Iodine, AstatineLiquids=BromineGasses= Fluorine, Chlorine

Do They look the same alone inNature? No they don’t, as you could tell fromthe previous slide the come in all ofthe forms. In addition they come inmany different colors.

What are they used for?Although they are not used for the samething they are used for........Fluorine-refrigerantsrefrigerantsChlorine-water purification + bleachBromine-poisonIodine-required for humansAstatine-unknown uses

On the periodic table what are theyCategorized as?On the periodic table, there is a figure of astaircase. The elements touching it are calledmetalloids. The ones to the left of the staircase arecalled metals. Ours classify as non-metals whichare located on the right side of the staircase. (staircase indicated by the arrows)
