8DiscoverNEWSUBD Particip<strong>at</strong>es in the Green Wave 2013Every year on 22 May, the world organises masstree-planting in a bid to increase awareness ofbiodiversity and the need to reduce its loss. This isdone as part of the global campaign known as <strong>The</strong>Green Wave, which celebr<strong>at</strong>es the Intern<strong>at</strong>ionalDay for Biodiversity and enables youth organis<strong>at</strong>ionsfrom all around the world to particip<strong>at</strong>e and makea substantial difference – “one school, one project,one step <strong>at</strong> a time”.Brunei Darussalam was not exempt from this excitingoccasion, with the local Forestry Departmenthaving provided UBD with a total of 800 n<strong>at</strong>ivetree species to be progressively placed aroundthe whole campus; so far a total of 300 specieshave been planted (Library Extension, SHBIE, FOS,FASS, IHS, UTH). Officers, staff and students of UBDparticip<strong>at</strong>ed in the event, with Yang Berhorm<strong>at</strong>Awang Hj Mohd Shafiee Ahmad, member of theBrunei Legisl<strong>at</strong>ive Council, present as the Guest ofHonour.Groups worldwide who particip<strong>at</strong>ed in the 2013 wave are visually represented by a tree on an interactivemap. On 22 May, beginning <strong>at</strong> 8:20 p.m. local time in the GMT+ time zone, new trees would appear onthe diagram. As in the previous years, the 2013 map filled up with trees in Asia and across continents toAmerica, cre<strong>at</strong>ing a “green wave” around the globe.<strong>The</strong> Green Wave is a project designed to support the objectives of the Convention on Biological Diversity,the world’s intern<strong>at</strong>ional tre<strong>at</strong>y th<strong>at</strong> promotes the conserv<strong>at</strong>ion and sustainable use of biodiversity andthe fair and equitable sharing of the benefits derived from genetic resources. <strong>The</strong> project aims to helpraise awareness and educ<strong>at</strong>e young people on the loss of biodiversity th<strong>at</strong> is taking place and the needto take action.3rd B<strong>at</strong>ch Chief Inform<strong>at</strong>ion Officers (CIOs) andChief <strong>Technology</strong> Officers (CTOs) e-GovernmentExecutive Training Workshop<strong>The</strong> four-week e-Government Executive Training Programme from 27 May 2013 to 25 June 2013 wasorganised by eG.InC UBD in collabor<strong>at</strong>ion with the Prime Minister’s Office, e-Government N<strong>at</strong>ional Centre(EGNC), and Korea Advanced Institute of Science and <strong>Technology</strong> (KAIST). <strong>The</strong> training programmeaimed to equip CIOs and CTOs with leadership capabilities and appropri<strong>at</strong>e knowledge and skillsas to how to innov<strong>at</strong>e an organis<strong>at</strong>ion using ICT. <strong>The</strong> workshop was <strong>at</strong>tended by Tuan Adi Shamsul HjSabli, Deputy Permanent Secretary for IT and e-Government of the Prime Minister’s Office; MuhammadNorshafiee D<strong>at</strong>o Paduka Hj Abdul Jalil, Director of e-Government N<strong>at</strong>ional Centre (EGNC); other seniorand government officials from various ministries as well as UBD staff members and postgradu<strong>at</strong>e students.Also in <strong>at</strong>tendance were participants from previous training programmes organised by eG.InC.<strong>The</strong> CIOs and CTOs underwent a Korea onsite training trip where they visited companies such as KoreaCadastral Survey Corpor<strong>at</strong>ion, GSTEP IT Centre, Brue House, Soledeos, Korean Telecom and Ahn Lab.<strong>The</strong> purpose of the onsite training is to learn from the country’s experiences in establishing and rollingout e-Government initi<strong>at</strong>ives through interviews, present<strong>at</strong>ions, and knowledge-sharing with agenciesth<strong>at</strong> are responsible for e-Government services. In this regard, Brunei participants, whose group-assignedprojects are in line with the e-Government projects, will be able to acquire str<strong>at</strong>egies, policies, standards,implement<strong>at</strong>ions, and know-how to initi<strong>at</strong>e the cross-ministry collabor<strong>at</strong>ions in e-Government projectsand services.<strong>The</strong> topics discussed in the workshop included Government Building Asset Management, Enhancementof Identity Card, and e-Halal – Certific<strong>at</strong>ion, Verific<strong>at</strong>ion, and Tracking. <strong>The</strong> workshop suggested ideas onpolicies, practices, and guidelines on business process reengineering (BPR), as well as d<strong>at</strong>a managementfor the near future e-Government initi<strong>at</strong>ives in the country. <strong>The</strong> participants also presented their observ<strong>at</strong>ionsand policy recommend<strong>at</strong>ions for improving e-Government performance in Brunei Darussalam.Seven Chief Inform<strong>at</strong>ion Officers (CIOs) and Chief <strong>Technology</strong> Officers (CTOs) from various ministries andgovernment agencies underwent their four-week e-Government Executive Training Programme from27 May 2013 to 25 June 2013, which was organised by the e-Government Innov<strong>at</strong>ion Centre (eG.InC),UBD in collabor<strong>at</strong>ion with the Prime Minister’s Office, e-Government N<strong>at</strong>ional Centre (EGNC), and KoreaAdvanced Institute of Science and <strong>Technology</strong> (KAIST). <strong>The</strong> training programme aimed to equip CIOsand CTOs with leadership capabilities and appropri<strong>at</strong>e knowledge and skills as to how to innov<strong>at</strong>e anorganis<strong>at</strong>ion using ICT.
