St Peter’s Church
The side of the stage in St Peter’s Church Hall might
not look like much but it was here that the Beatles
really started. It was on 6th July 1957 that a young John
Lennon, getting ready to play for the church dance with
The Quarrymen, was introduced to Paul McCartney. Paul
played his set of rock and roll classics and John was so
impressed that he asked him to join the band. And so
The Quarrymen became the Beatles.
Take time to explore the church yard and you’ll find
the gravestone of Eleanor Rigby, famously featured in
the 1966 hit. Search further and find the gravestone
of George Toogood Smith. Fans of the Beatles will
probably know the name – he was John’s uncle, Aunt
Mimi’s husband and the person who bought him his first
musical instrument, a harmonica.
