in the system of care and in the waysthat doctors view their roles and theirperformance. All providers of careneed to be able to see the care systemfrom the patients’ perspective if theyare to help their patients make senseof and benefit from an increasinglycomplex system. Cooperationbetween general practitioners andspecialists might be improved. Thisincludes strategic perspectives andboth targets for improvement andmethods for teaching, training anddevelopment that are all independentof country and health care system. The10 targets for development identifiedby the group are: leadership, initialshared care approaches, task division, mutual guidelines, patient perspective, informatics, education, team building, quality monitoring systems, and costeffectiveness. Working towards thesetargets could provide an effectiveapproach to improving the cooperationbetween the interfaces of care. Gettingeffective leadership is a necessaryfirst step as implementation of such astrategy will involve significant change.Responsibility lies primarily with themedical profession.MEDICINE AND SOCIET YConclusionsReferences1.2.3.4.5.6.7.18A multiprong approch involvingefforts in promotion of family medicinein areas of education, research, andservice with particular emphasis ondelivery of high quality in all areasis proposed as a strategy to improvethe status of family doctors.Phillips WR, Haynes DG.
