Through theprocess of trial and error, he replaced the universal-joint coupling with a bevel-gearmechanism. The new system consisted of three sets of bevel gears to transmit the spindlemotion to the hobbing attachment. The bevel-gear system is inherently superior to theuniversal-joint coupling because the velocity of the output shaft remains uniformthroughout. This avoids jerks that cause unacceptable vibrations.For his contribution he won the Consolation Award in NIF’s Second National Competitionfor Grassroots Innovations and Traditional Knowledge Practices in 2002.PUNJAB INNOVATES 13
