The continental and global contextThe Canadian oil sands resource – the total amount of bitumen in the ground – is estimated at1.7 trillion barrels, of which 169.3 billion barrels are considered recoverable reserves, based on currenteconomics and technology. Eighty per cent of these reserves, approximately 135 billion barrels, canonly be recovered through in-situ processes. Reserves currently under development, through bothmining and in-situ methods, total 25.9 billion barrels. The recoverable oil sands reserves in northernAlberta represent a potential supply larger than the conventional crude oil reserves of Iran, Iraq orKuwait, and are third only to those of Saudi Arabia and Venezuela.Bitumen and heavy oil resources are found in many other parts of the world, including off Canada’s EastCoast and in the Arctic Islands, but none of the known deposits come close to the scale of Alberta’s oilsands and the Orinoco heavy oil region of Venezuela. In addition, there are numerous deposits of oilshales around the world, but extracting hydrocarbons economically from oil shales has proved verydifficult. However, new technologies and processes are improving the economical viability of theseresources. Relatively abundant coal resources also can be gasified or converted into liquid fuels, butthis poses major economic and environmental challenges.Crude oil plays a central role in the North American and world economies. Nearly all motorizedtransportation (except electric rail) currently depends on gasoline, diesel, jet and marine fuels refinedfrom crude oil. Transportation fuels account for about three-quarters of current crude oil consumption.Many other products, from asphalt paving and roofing to synthetic rubber, are manufacturedeconomically from by-products of crude oil. While alternatives such as ethanol and biodiesel canfill some of the mobile fuel demand, it would take much of the world’s cropland to supply all thetransportation energy now obtained from crude oil.
