LÓPEZ CURRICULUM VITAE PAGE 3 ADMINISTRATIVE EXPERIENCE FOUNDING DIRECTOR, UNM Center for Biomedical Engineering (CBME), University of New Mexico (July 2005 to November 2009) Based largely on the success of Prof. López and his collaborators in securing and executing large interdisciplinary research projects at the nexus of biology, medicine and engineering, the University of New Mexico has made biomedical engineering one of its strategic thrust areas for research and education. This is the first coordinated effort to bring bioengineering to the State of New Mexico. The Center provides a nucleus for future interdisciplinary academic programs in biomedical engineering and develop strategic partnerships with the National Labs and other educational institutions. As a first step in this direction, Prof. Lopez shepherded the establishment of the Center for Biomedical Engineering as an interdisciplinary research center. The Director reports to the Dean of Engineering and to the Vice Provost for Research and Economic Development, and leads a core group of twelve faculty members from several UNM departments. Center highlights include: � Securing of a $2,500,000 grant from the National Science Foundation’s PREM Program. This project (detailed below) is led by Prof. Gabriel P López. � Receipt a grant of $3,500,000 grant from the Air Force Office of Scientific Research’s Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (MURI). This project, led by Prof. Plamen Atanassov, is entitled “Fundamentals and Engineering of Enzymatic Fuel Cells” and includes participants from Columbia Univ., St. Louis Univ. Northeastern Univ. Univ. of Hawaii, and Michigan State Univ. � Receipt of a grant from the Defense Threat Reduction Agency to convene a workshop and then to develop a Roadmap for DTRA’s University Strategic Programs in Biotechnology. Prof. David Whitten is the Principal Investigator of this effort. � Advancement of the Center for Emerging Energy Technology as one of the top priorities of the University of New Mexico for Federal funding. � Advancement of Biomedical Engineering Education as one of the top priorities of the University of New Mexico for State funding. These efforts have culminated in the awarding of funding for four new faculty positions in biomedical engineering within the UNM School of Engineering (April 2007).
