Letter from <strong>the</strong> Board PresidentAt <strong>Monmouth</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> <strong>Center</strong>, we had much to celebrate in <strong>2010</strong>. It was a year in which we once again took many stepsto maintain our position as <strong>the</strong> region’s leading university-level academic medical center.As <strong>Monmouth</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> <strong>Center</strong> marks <strong>the</strong> eve of its 125th year, we take pride in <strong>the</strong> recent accomplishments that arepropelling us toward a bright future that promises continued growth and success. For <strong>Monmouth</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> <strong>Center</strong>, <strong>2010</strong> wasa year of remarkable accomplishments highlighted by several national recognitions of <strong>the</strong> quality of our care.The Jacqueline M. Wilentz Comprehensive Breast <strong>Center</strong> became <strong>the</strong> first facility in New Jersey and <strong>the</strong> 10th in <strong>the</strong>nation to be accredited as a Certified Quality Breast <strong>Center</strong>. Certification by <strong>the</strong> National Quality Measures for Breast <strong>Center</strong>s(NQMBC) demonstrates we place <strong>the</strong> quality care of our patients as a priority. NQMBC uses quality metrics to allow breastcenters to compare <strong>the</strong>ir performance with o<strong>the</strong>rs across <strong>the</strong> United States. The Wilentz <strong>Center</strong>’s commitment to meeting<strong>the</strong> needs of all women when it comes to breast health care were crucial to this coveted recognition.Also illustrating this commitment to excellence is <strong>Monmouth</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> <strong>Center</strong>’s naming by HealthGrades—<strong>the</strong>nation’s premier independent health-care quality company—as a recipient of <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>2010</strong> Emergency Medicine ExcellenceAward. What this means is that patients in need of emergency care, who choose treatment at <strong>Monmouth</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> <strong>Center</strong>,are being treated at one of <strong>the</strong> top five percent of hospitals nationwide for emergency medicine excellence.In a life-threatening emergency, a patient’s life may depend upon where <strong>the</strong>y seek emergency care. The HealthGradesstudy proves what we’ve known for a long time: <strong>Monmouth</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> <strong>Center</strong> is <strong>the</strong> best hospital in this region foremergency medicine. Our patients have a much greater survival rate from serious complications, such as heart attack,pneumonia or stroke, when <strong>the</strong>y come to <strong>Monmouth</strong> for care.And for those who suffer from congestive heart failure, <strong>Monmouth</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> <strong>Center</strong>’s new Heart Failure ManagementProgram brings toge<strong>the</strong>r a multidisciplinary team of experts who effectively monitor developments and changes in HFpatients, provide interventions to manage symptoms, and help prevent <strong>the</strong> need for emergency care or hospital readmission.It is dedicated to helping patients and caregivers become more actively involved through education and by having accessto a multidisciplinary team offering consistent follow up care.Also in <strong>2010</strong>, <strong>Monmouth</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> <strong>Center</strong> was chosen to participate in a key national initiative to improve care forheart failure patients. The Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) selected <strong>Monmouth</strong> and only 14 o<strong>the</strong>r U.S. hospitalsfor its Mentor Hospital Registry for Congestive Heart Failure (CHF). <strong>Monmouth</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> <strong>Center</strong> was <strong>the</strong> only New Jerseyhospital tapped for this volunteer initiative to provide support, advice, clinical expertise, and guidance to hospitals seekinghelp with <strong>the</strong>ir healthcare improvement efforts.At The Children’s Hospital at <strong>Monmouth</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> <strong>Center</strong>, <strong>the</strong> outstanding quality news continued as well in <strong>2010</strong>. Theprestigious American Diabetes Association Education Recognition Certificate for a quality diabetes self-managementeducation program was recently awarded to <strong>the</strong> pediatric endocrinology program of The Children’s Hospital at <strong>Monmouth</strong><strong>Medical</strong> <strong>Center</strong>. The Association’s recognition assures that <strong>the</strong> program meets <strong>the</strong> National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management and helps patients identify quality diabetes programs. The process gives professionals a national standard tomeasure <strong>the</strong> quality of services <strong>the</strong>y provide, and it assures patients <strong>the</strong>y will receive high-quality service.As evidenced by <strong>the</strong>se recent prestigious national awards and accomplishments, <strong>Monmouth</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> <strong>Center</strong> remainsunrelenting in its quest for continued success. Embracing new ideas and implementing new strategies, <strong>Monmouth</strong> <strong>Medical</strong><strong>Center</strong> has a tenacious dedication and commitment to <strong>the</strong> highest quality of care.We have indeed made great strides in <strong>the</strong> last few years, and we are so grateful to our family of generous supporterswithout whom many of <strong>the</strong>se recognitions would not have been possible.
