In workstation design, ergonomics is the science of fitting the physical aspects of the workenvironment to the anatomy of the human body. It’s more than creating workspaces based on convenience. A simple understanding of ergonomics andworkstation design can save companies money, and reduce employees pain and health issues. This knowledge can reduce the risk of injuries, therebyimproving employee morale and productivity.Injuries are the result of force, posture and repetition. If these factors are not neutralized, musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) can occur. They typicallyresult when an employee is required to perform a task in a physical environment not suited for their physical abilities. MSDs are injuries and disordersof the muscles, nerves, tendons, ligaments, joints, cartilage and spinal discs.• Symptoms of musculoskeletal disorders include numbness, burning, pain, tingling, cramping and stiffness.• Examples of musculoskeletal disorders are: carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis, sciatica, herniated discs and low back pain.Effects of these conditions have significant impact on worker productivity and, ultimately, financial losses to organizations.Different Types of Office WorkersThere are generally three different types of office workers, determined by the amount of time sat at a computer performing their task each day.
