News...News...News...<strong>School</strong> CouncilThe re-launch of the <strong>School</strong> Councilhas got off to a fantastic start withexcellent commitment and enthusiasmfrom all pupils and students. Themeetings are buzzing with ideas andrecommendations to put to senior stafffor their consideration. Having beengiven a grant of £1,000 from The<strong>Ashcombe</strong> Trust, students are activelyconsidering how best to spend themoney. Serious discussion and thoughthas been given to a range of schoolissues including developing a web pageto aid communication and providesupport to younger pupils, anti-bullying,the siting of new CCTV cameras, theuniform review, next year’s studentplanner, water dispensers and foodserved in the canteen. Futurediscussions will include combattinglitter and developing ideas regardingthe uniform to submit to Governors.Mrs ReedPeer mentoringOur scheme, part of the Surrey Peer Support Project, has now been running forfour years and 25 Year 10 pupils have been involved with this year’s Year 7.The mentors are trained and the system here is coordinated by Miss Taylor.TanzaniaWe are delighted to have beenawarded a three-year grant fromthe British Council for a Global <strong>School</strong>Partnership Award.Working with the Department forInternational Development andCommonwealth Education Fund, wewill use the money to develop jointcurriculum links involving studentsand staff in both countries and we willbe able to enrich our curriculumprovision particularly in Humanities.WorldBook Day2006The Study Centreheld a number ofactivities to celebrateWorld Book Day on2nd March. Theseincluded a lively andamusing talk to theYear 7s by the author,Peter Corey, a displayof the favourite booksof the staff, a booksale, quizzes and wordpuzzles.Design TechnologyCongratulations to Louise Shaw,Alexander Gowan Webster, HughBaker, Andrew Higgins, Curt Guven,Colette Parker, Sophie Mackie andAmy Birch from Year 8 who tookpart in a county-wide Science andTechnology day for gifted andtalented children held in Reigate.Worldwise QuizThe Geography department entereda team of Year 10 students into theregional rounds of the GeographicalAssociation’s Worldwise Quiz.Preliminary rounds were held in theschool and a team of three - AliceHearn, Laura Grimes and LouiseWilson - came fourth in the regionalfinals at Kingston University.9
