MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, CAMBRIDGE, MA: Department of Chemical En-
gineering
• Research Affiliate (part-time); Energy Systems, supervisor: Paul I. Barton; 07/2006-12/2007
Developed a Lagrangian duality framework in thermodynamics. Devised and implemented algo-
rithms for semi-infinite programs with nonconvex lower-level problems.
• Research Assistant (full-time); Micropower Generation, supervisor: Paul I. Barton; 02/2002-
06/2006
Modeled man-portable fuel cell systems and developed a methodology for optimal design and op-
eration. Devised and implemented algorithms for (i) parametric mixed-integer optimization, and
(ii) for the global solution of bilevel programs with nonconvex lower-level problems. Supervised
undergraduate students Michael M. Hencke and Ruth Misener in research projects during their
sophomore year.
KARLSRUHE UNIVERSITY, KARLSRUHE, GERMANY
• Undergraduate Researcher (full-time); Aerosol Deposition; supervisors: Arne Manthey and Karl-
heinz Schaber; 09/1998-03/1999
Measured aerosol concentration profiles in an air-steam condenser using a three wavelength ex-
tinction technique. Developed fluid dynamic models in FORTRAN and FiDAP. Developed models
for the deposition of aerosol particles.
• Undergraduate Researcher (part-time); Rheology; supervisors: Sigrun Stein and Hans Buggisch;
