Finding The Right <strong>Key</strong> Blank3The Customer:A <strong>Key</strong> Information SourceThe customer is your most valuable informationsource in narrowing the options down toarrive at the right key blank. Ask him or herhow the key is used; for example, to open thedoor, or a cabinet, or start a car, or open thetrunk of a car. Then ask if they know the brandof house lock or the make of the car. The morespecific the information you can obtain fromthe customer, the faster you’ll be able to identifythe right key blank.The <strong>Key</strong> Itself:Identifying InformationLook for identification marks on the key head(bow). You may find the manufacturer’s name,a key number, or an EZ number, which is asimple alphanumeric code, such as KW1 for aKwikset key.Locating the Right <strong>Key</strong> Blankon a <strong>Key</strong> DisplayHy-Ko’s <strong>Key</strong> Display has panels with key blanksarranged according to their use: automotive;house, door, cabinet, padlock, etc. In addition,EZ numbers appear with each kind of key blank.With the knowledge on how a customer uses akey and the EZ number that appears on thecustomer’s key, you’ll quickly locate the rightkey blank.However, if you only know how the customeruses the key, and there’s no information on thekey, then you need to use visual identificationto locate the right key blank. To do so, hold thecustomer’s key and place it next to key blankson the display’s application panels. You have amatch when the heads, shoulder stops, millings,blade lengths and tips of the customer’s key anda key blank are all aligned.Locating the Right <strong>Key</strong> Blankin this <strong>Catalog</strong>If you can’t find the correct key blank on thedisplay panel, turn to this catalog. It is alsoorganized according to how keys are used(automotive, house, cabinet, etc.). Go to thesection that deals with how the customer usesthe key, and begin placing the customer’s keyon top of the illustrations of the various keyblanks. You have an almost-match when theheads, shoulder stops, blade lengths and tipsof the customer’s key and a key blank are allaligned.But you must check if the millings match. Todo so, use the milling cross section beneatheach key blank illustration to determine if themillings of the customer’s key are the same asthose on the key blank. Raise the key verticallyon its tip and place it on the cross section.
