History of StereomicroscopySTEREOMICROSCOPYor only slightly greater than, simplerstereo only viewers.Although stereographoscopes maylook substantial they are usually somewhatlightweight delicate devices, ofteninexpensively made and easily damaged. As they do not have the eyeshadeof the standard stereo viewer, they arenot as easy to use, and often were opticallyinferior. However, they werequite popular, as they display nicely, and many were made. Some of the moreexpensive models were designed forimpressive appearance and were builtfrom specialty woods. They often hadattractive engravings and added ornamentation. The terms graphoscope and stereographoscopewere later used by variousmanufacturers, sometimes withonly slight punctuation variations, e.g.,grapho-scope, or stereo-graphoscope,Figure 19 (top): "Collin's LawsonBinocular Dissecting Microscope"from Hogg 1867Figure 20 (right) Collins' Lawsonbinocular dissecting microscope.MicrobeHunter Microscopy Magazine - December 2012 - 17
