Lower Providence Volunteer Fire DepartmentThe Township's volunteer FireDepartment provides fire protection tothe residents, businesses, and visitorsof Lower Providence Township. Itconsists of two firehouses, one onRidge Pike in Eagleville and one onLark Lane in Audubon and nineapparatus. The "steerclear" law requires motorists to moveover or reduce their speed when theysee emergency responders, includinglaw enforcement, fire officials,emergency medical technicians, towtruck operators or highway workers.The law applies any time anemergency vehicle has its lightsflashing or where road crews oremergency personnel have lightedflares, posted signs or other trafficcontrol devices. Failure to move overor slow down can result in a summaryoffense that carries a fine of up to$250. In addition, fines will bedoubled for traffic violationsoccurring in these areas. If thatviolation leads to a worker beinginjured, a 90-day license suspensioncould result. In cases where lawenforcement may not be present, thelaw allows road workers andemergency responders to reportviolations by motorists. Lawenforcement can issue citations basedon these reports.Calling 9-1-1 Froma Cell PhoneAnyone using a cellphone to call 9-1-1near theMontgomeryCounty border isasked toimmediately state, "I am calling fromMontgomery County" when the calltaker answers the phone. TheMontgomery County Department ofPublic Safety explains that if thenearest cell town to where the call isplaced is across the border in aneighboring county, the call will berouted to the 9-1-1 centers inPhiladelphia, Bucks, Berks, Chesteror Delaware counties. The call willthen be transferred to MontgomeryCounty.
