Senator Ken (Jake)<br />
Jacobsen introduced<br />
a resolution in the<br />
Washington State<br />
Senate recognizing<br />
<strong>The</strong> <strong>Danish</strong> <strong>Immigrant</strong><br />
<strong>Museum</strong> and the<br />
importance of <strong>Danish</strong><br />
immigrants in the<br />
state of Washington.<br />
Senator Jacobsen<br />
is originally from<br />
Dannebrog, Nebraska,<br />
but moved to<br />
Washington when he<br />
was a boy.<br />
John Mark Nielsen,<br />
executive director of<br />
<strong>The</strong> <strong>Danish</strong> <strong>Immigrant</strong><br />
<strong>Museum</strong>, and Bruce<br />
Bro, the museum’s<br />
development director were<br />
present for the passage of<br />
this resolution along with<br />
former Washington State<br />
Senator Harriet Albertsen<br />
Spanel, who is the current<br />
president of the museum’s<br />
board of directors. Mark<br />
Schleck, president and<br />
director of the Scan|Design<br />
Foundation by Inger and<br />
Jens Bruun and Mary<br />
DeLorme, grants and<br />
operations manager<br />
for the foundation, also<br />
attended. <strong>The</strong> Scan|Design<br />
Foundation has provided<br />
generous grants to <strong>The</strong><br />
<strong>Danish</strong> <strong>Immigrant</strong> <strong>Museum</strong><br />
to underwrite its <strong>Danish</strong><br />
internship program.<br />

WHEREAS, <strong>The</strong><br />
United States is<br />
a nation built by<br />
diverse peoples<br />
from all parts of the<br />
world and brought<br />
to our country their<br />
energy, skills, and<br />
a deep desire to<br />
build a better life;<br />
and<br />
WHEREAS,<br />
<strong>Danish</strong> immigrants<br />
and their<br />
descendants<br />
have made a<br />
profound impact<br />
by furthering the<br />
proud democratic traditions<br />
that have defined the<br />
United States and made<br />
our country a beacon of<br />
liberty and progress to the<br />
world; and<br />
WHEREAS, <strong>The</strong> <strong>Danish</strong><br />
<strong>Immigrant</strong> <strong>Museum</strong> has<br />
faithfully carried out its<br />
mission to recognize<br />
and share the legacy of<br />
the <strong>Danish</strong> <strong>Immigrant</strong><br />
experience while<br />
preserving the immigration<br />
story from Denmark and<br />
Northern Europe; and<br />
WHEREAS, <strong>The</strong> <strong>Danish</strong><br />
<strong>Immigrant</strong> <strong>Museum</strong>,<br />
founded in 1983, continues<br />
its campaign to better<br />
preserve and share<br />
the <strong>Danish</strong>-<strong>America</strong>n<br />
experience through the<br />
use of state-of-the-art<br />
technologies, displays, and<br />
exhibits; and<br />

Archive and Library at<br />
Dana College, the <strong>Danish</strong><br />
<strong>Immigrant</strong> Archives at<br />
Grand View University,<br />
and the <strong>Danish</strong> <strong>America</strong>n<br />
Heritage Society to better<br />
preserve the <strong>Danish</strong><br />
<strong>Immigrant</strong> experience; and<br />
WHEREAS, Several cities<br />
in the state of Washington,<br />
notably Seattle,<br />
Bellingham, and Enumclaw<br />
have long maintained their<br />
strong <strong>Danish</strong> traditions,<br />
and preserved the proud<br />
legacy of those <strong>Danish</strong><br />
people who first came<br />
to the Pacific Northwest<br />
over 150 years ago and<br />
whose profound impact<br />
on the development of our<br />
economy and progress of<br />
our social values continues<br />
today;<br />
NOW THEREFORE, BE<br />
IT RESOLVED, That the<br />
Washington State Senate<br />
does hereby acknowledge<br />
and honor <strong>The</strong> <strong>Danish</strong><br />
<strong>Immigrant</strong> <strong>Museum</strong>; and<br />
BE IT FURTHER<br />
RESOLVED, That copies<br />
of this resolution be<br />
immediately transmitted by<br />
the Secretary of the Senate<br />
to <strong>The</strong> <strong>Danish</strong> <strong>Immigrant</strong><br />
<strong>Museum</strong>.<br />
