Performance StepsNote: The preoperational tests are complete. The display again shows the threezeros <strong>and</strong> indicates the dose rate, which is variable. The radiac set is ready fornormal operation.Note: Turn the radiac set off <strong>and</strong> send it to organization maintenance for repair ifany of the events required during the preoperational test do not occur.2. Operate the AN/VDR-2 radiac set.a. Survey an area for radiation contamination.(1) St<strong>and</strong> in the open.(2) Hold the radiac set waist high. (The probe can be carried either inthe pouch or held in your h<strong>and</strong>, as desired.)(3) Turn 360 degrees slowly.(4) Record the highest reading.b. Monitor the equipment or supplies for radiation contamination.(1) Open the shield of the probe.(2) Face away from the suspected contamination.(3) Take a background reading.(4) Record the highest reading.(5) Leave the shield open, <strong>and</strong> hold the probe about 1 inch from theitem being monitored.(6) Hold the probe perpendicular to the surface, <strong>and</strong> move it along thesurface with a slow, steady motion.(7) Record the reading using the correct unit of measurement.Note: If the reading is twice the background or higher, contamination is present.c. Monitor personnel for radiation contamination.(1) Take a background reading, <strong>and</strong> record the reading.(2) Have the person to be monitored st<strong>and</strong> straight with his/her feetapart, arms extended sideward, palms facing up, <strong>and</strong> fingers straight.(3) Hold the probe about one inch away from the person, <strong>and</strong> pass theprobe over both his/her h<strong>and</strong>s (with his/her palms up) <strong>and</strong> his/her arms, <strong>and</strong> thenrepeat the pass with his/her palms turned down.(4) Pass the probe over the entire front of his/her body, starting at thetop of his/her head. Check his/her hair, forehead, nose, lips, neckline, torso,knees, <strong>and</strong> ankles.(5) Repeat the process from head to ankles over the back of theindividual, <strong>and</strong> include the soles of his/her feet.(6) Record the reading using the correct unit or measurement, <strong>and</strong>record the portion of his/her body that is contaminated. Note: If a reading on any portion of the individual's body is twice the backgroundrecording or higher, contamination is present.(7) Have the individual await further instructions.(8) Inform your supervisor of the contamination.Skill <strong>Level</strong> 2 031-503-1022 3-37
