Easter is soon here … A Message from Perry Jones, Executive Director As we celebrate the resurrection of Christ I am reminded of the words of the apostle Peter. “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.” At Capital City Rescue Mission new birth and living hope are all around us in the form of lives being transformed by the resurrection power of Christ. Inside you will read about Victor who is filled with hope because of his new life in Christ. He is employed, living a life free from addiction, and eager to share the good news of salvation with others. His joy is reflected in his gratitude to the Mission. Gratefully, “For we are God’s fellow workers…” Easter...Miracle of New Life …and again we turn to the immortal words of Job, “I know that my redeemer lives, and that in the end he will stand upon the earth.” These words are all about Easter. The empty tomb. A risen Lord…a Lord who helps us feed the hungry, comfort the fearful, and befriend those who have no one to turn to. He is also a Lord who wants us to provide rescue for the long haul. Not simply food and clothing for the body. He is a Lord who, through the power of the resurrection, is able to bring hope and new life to all who repent and call in faith upon His name. This is the work we see God doing every day. We don’t make the transformation happen – He does. But you are partners.
He Has a Living Hope, because you care! My name is Victor. I am 38 years old. I was born and raised in Puerto Rico although my dad lived in New York – in Manhattan. At a young age, about 12, I started hanging around with the wrong crowd and began drinking. Soon I was using and abusing other drugs, marijuana and eventually cocaine. As a teenager, my mom sent me to recovery programs – which helped for a while - but after a time I was back to drug abuse, even visiting my dad and doing drugs together. At 19, I married and we had a daughter. My wife’s mother didn’t think much of me. After two years we divorced. I was drinking too much and not good for her. For years my life revolved around turning to drugs and alcohol to escape from the problems I did not want to face. Although I had a year of sobriety and made a commitment to God, I relapsed again. For the next 3 ½ years drug use and overwhelming depression made me think I was losing my mind. My church finally sent me to Capital City Rescue Mission’s New Life Program for help. At the Rescue Mission I found a place of refuge and a place of peace. At first, I just prayed and prayed that And a Risen Lord You helped meet so many of our critical needs during the Thanksgiving and Christmas season. Thank you!! Now we again have an opportunity to work together to share the hope that only a relationship with the living God can provide. God bless you for being a partner in hope this Easter! Thank you for a new beginning with Christ! God would take the desire for drugs and alcohol out of my mind. I was disgusted with my life and wanted a new start. After 3 or 4 weeks the Word of God began to reach into my heart. I felt brand new. I understood God loved me and Jesus died for me. I trusted that His death paid for my sin and He has forgiven me. I am not perfect, but I have learned that even though I fall, I can get up and go forward in my relationship with Him. Suddenly, the Bible began calling to me. Never a good reader, I have begun to read every day so I can know and understand what God is saying to me. “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” 2 Corinthians 5:17 At the Rescue Mission I have become a new creation. I am now cooking at a local restaurant and saving money so I can start my own business. I am also connected with my church and looking forward to going on missions trips. But, best of all, I am connected with my God and Savior. Thank you for caring about me by supporting the Rescue Mission! Thank you for a new beginning – you have a special place in my heart. What Legacy Will You Leave? Now is the time to plan… Far too often headache and heart- ache are the legacy if you die without a will.
