ASHCOMBE TVAfter the first two <strong>School</strong> Council meetings of the yeardiscussions led to the possibility of starting up a TVprogramme that would keep pupils up to date with whatwas happening around school. <strong>Ashcombe</strong> TV wasborn. Still in its infancy <strong>Ashcombe</strong> TV is made up of adedicated group of Year 7 pupils, ably supported bythree Year 10 students and one Year 11. So far therehave been episodes covering the senior citizen bazaars,the Christmas Carol Concert and an exclusive interviewwith Mr Blow. The episodes have also been uploaded tothe school website, and go a long way in showing apupil’s perspective of school life.GCSE HOSPITALITY AND CATERINGTheir task was to prepare a two-course meal for a high classrestaurant. The Year 11 pupils excelled, and the meals wereoutstanding! The mixes of flavours, colours and textureswere mouth-watering! And marks were boosted by thoseprofessional touches in the food presentation and in theserving of the meal. Well done to the pupils and thank youparents for all your help and encouragement.CALLING ALL BUDDINGCOMPUTER PROGRAMMERS!Miss Dobson and the ICT department are pleased to launcha new Year 9 coding project called “Greenfoot”. This givesstudents the opportunity to try their hand at the computerprogramming language, Java and write their own computergames! They can share their finished creations withstudents from across the country through an online codingcommunity on the Greenfoot website. A great opportunityfor all budding programmers out there!.SCHOOL CAROL SERVICEOn Monday 10th December the annual <strong>Ashcombe</strong> carolconcert took place at St Paul’s church in Dorking.Thanks to the Music staff for all their hard work, thestudents who took part and the PTA for organisingrefreshments. Thanks also to St Paul’s for allowing usto hold the service at the church and for contributingsuch thoughtful words and prayers.ACTIONAID –SPONSOR A CHILD SCHEMEThe <strong>Ashcombe</strong> has for many years been proud tosponsor 12 children through ActionAid with studentsfrom the lower school taking a lead in maintaining aregular correspondence with them. Recently it wasespecially heart-warming to receive a letter back fromJohn Charles, our sponsored child in Brazil, who hadsent a photograph of himself surrounded by all thefantastic letters, pictures and tutor group photos thathad been sent to him by 9XS and 9YS. Just beforeChristmas, students put in a stunning effort to producehundreds of wonderful letters and pictures, including abeautiful hand-made friendship bracelet and impressiveorigami dragon, to send to their sponsored children.6TH FORM CAROL CONCERTThe 6th Formers braced bitterly cold weather for theirannual Carol Concert. Chocolate log and mince pieswere provided courtesy of the tutors and the carolsinging was definitely an improvement on last year!
